What really happens in counseling? This quick guide will give you insight as to what really goes on in counseling and what you will gain by going.

Making the decision to go to counseling can be hard to do. Whether it’s individual counseling, family counseling or marriage counseling that you are considering there is a lot of contemplation and anxiety that can come with it. Many people feel strange telling their problems to someone they do not know. Others may feel that the counselor is there to judge them. Read on to learn how you can benefit from going to counseling.

Talking to your counselor

While it may be true that it isn’t always easy to open up about your personal life, it may be easier than you think. Keep in mind that this is a professional person that is only there to listen and to help you. You only have to tell the counselor what you are comfortable with and most likely before you know it you will be surprised at just how much you want to talk about. Counselors and therapists have a knack for asking just the right questions in order to get you talking. This is a good thing because the more you share with them, the more they will be able to help you in resolving the issues you are having.

The answer is inside of you

Many people are under the impression that counselors will tell them exactly what they need to do in order to fix their problem and become frustrated when this does not take place. Counselors are there to listen and to offer guidance. This does not entail being able to solve your problem in one session. If you are dedicated to solving the problem and making progress, then you will be able to do just that. Often times counselors are able to lead you down the right path in order to come up with the answer that is best for you. The answer is not the same for everyone which is why the counselor cannot tell you what to do. If he did that he may not be giving you an answer that would actually help you. It is always more beneficial when you find the answer together through your work with the counselor.

Unresolved issues

Counseling helps you to talk about things that you may have buried deep and that you haven’t talked about in years. Most everyone has some unresolved issues whether it is from your childhood, a failed relationship, abuse you may have experienced, or from a recent incident that is causing you stress. Being able to talk about whatever is bothering you can lift the burden of carrying all that pain with you day in and day out. By talking about it, as painful as it may be, you are acknowledging that you were hurt by something, thus allowing you to be able to move forward.

Counseling is a process

Everyone’s situation and experience in counseling is different. Going to counseling does not mean that you are crazy or that something is wrong with you. To the contrary, it actually means that you are a healthy person who is able to recognize that you need help and is strong enough to ask for it from a professional person. Remember, the counselor is not there to judge you. He or she is a neutral person who has been trained to help people resolve any personal problems they are having. They may use different techniques or skills in order to get to the core problem that sometimes is difficult to uncover because of other things that are going on as well. When deciding to go to counseling, you have nothing to lose. You will only gain insight into yourself and gain help with your problem. If you are willing to do the emotional work necessary to resolve the problem, then you will be able to effectively resolve it. You will also gain many different coping skills, so that in the future if a problem arises you will be able to effectively resolve it on your own.
