The Maxima is a full-size car manufactured by automaker Nissan; it was first introduced in 1976. The vehicle is now in its fifth generation and has changed design and shape throughout the years. This vehicle is known to produce transmission shifting problems from second to third gear and transmission gears. Transmission leaks were reported in the 2004-2006 model years.
Nissan Maxima Recalls
If you are considering purchasing a Maxima, some model years are known to produce more transmission problems than others. The 2004 and 2006 models have been recalled in the past for transmission leaks and shifting problems from second to third gear. As of the end of 2010, there were not any outstanding recalls for Maxima transmissions. Consult your local Nissan dealership to determine which model years are better than others.
Transmission Shifting Problems
The Maxima has experienced shifting problems from second gear to third gear after a cold start. If the vehicle transmission does not engage into first gear after idling for at least five minutes, this could mean a failing transmission. Vehicles experiencing this type of shifting problem should be inspected by a qualified mechanic. Not all transmission problems indicate a serious problem, but all transmission symptoms should be looked at closely.
Low Fluid Levels
The Maxima has been known to experience low transmission fluid levels due to leaks in the transmission. This could cause some gears to not shift or transmission failure. If the fluid level is too low it will not adequately lubricate the transmission. Check your fluid levels with the transmission oil dipstick which should be located near the engine oil dipstick. Wipe the dipstick off with a white paper towel. Place the dipstick back into the reservoir and pull it out. Read the fluid level on the stick. If the fluid level is low, add the proper amount of transmission fluid to the reservoir. The transmission fluid levels should be inspected on a regular basis to catch leaks. The vehicle should be inspected by an experienced mechanic if it is producing these problems.
Conducting online research would be helpful before deciding to purchase a new Nissan Maxima. Determining which problems are more prevalent than others is necessary before spending a large some of money.
