I'll admit it - I'm not a Nora Roberts fan. I find her books too predictable and a tad too fluffy for my liking. That said, I know I am in the minority. Nora Roberts has written more than 190 novels and has sold over 400 million books worldwide. She is a number one New York Times bestselling author. Eight of her books have been made into movies and her website gets over a million hits a month.
A friend nagged me for a month to read The Search by Nora Roberts. To get her to stop pestering me more than anything else, I picked up a copy of the book. Am I ever glad I caved into the pressure!
The Search has it all - characters you grow to care about, enough intrigue to keep you turning the pages, and a storyline with enough twists to keep you tightly reeled in.
The Search: Plot Synopsis
The novel revolves around Fiona Bristow, a heroine that is strong yet gentle. She survived the attack of a serial killer a decade before the opening of the book, an attack that killed her then-fiancee and their dog. She has rebuilt her life in a remote place and leads a quiet life as a dog trainer and a canine search and rescue volunteer.
Enter Simon, an artist who creates things from wood. He is also on the hunt for a peaceful life. Simon and Fiona are magnets to one another and can't help but fall in love and lust, much to the delight of the reader who finds the duo work better as a team than as individuals. There is also the obligatory cast of quirky characters from the beloved stepmother to the quirky best friend and the stoic FBI agent.
We discover that the serial killer Fiona escaped from has been plotting his revenge from his jail cell where he will remain until he is dead. He has a voracious need for revenge on the only victim that managed to survive his murderous grasp. He spent the last decade searching for and training the ideal candidate to carry out his plot. As the killer's apprentice gets closer to Fiona and her idyllic life, the tension is kicked up a few more notches and we cross our fingers that Fiona and Simon will survive.
The ending, while gratifying and tense, is unpredictable and leaves the reader more than satisfied. If Roberts continues to churn out books of this caliber, novels that leave you wanting much more, she will stay on the top of the bestseller lists.
