Originating from the Italian word “salone,” referring to reception halls, socially speaking the word “salon” has come to be used in reference both to the drawing room or sitting room and also to the 17th- and 18th-century societies for cultural discussion.
The salons of the Enlightenment were an opportunity for a group of individuals with a similar interest to chat about the subject of their selection. From literature to politics these intimate soirees served as a means to speak and socialize, and interviewer Valerie Smaldone successfully updates this cultural experience to modern-day Manhattan by hosting Sunday evenings of disccusion with some of Broadway’s names of fame.
All are invited to enjoy an evening of refreshments and refreshing conversation as Smaldone interviews those cast and crew who tread the boards.
Past Guests and Chit Chat
Thus far Sunday Salon guests have been Broadway choreographer Christopher Gattelli (13, South Pacific)and performers James Barbour (Jane Eyre, A Tale of Two Cities) and Orfeh (Legally Blonde).
Each guest is asked about their “road to the stage” and “what moves them as individuals.” Sharing anecdotes and thoughts, the guests allow audiences to watch theater from backstage.
While enjoying a glass of wine, snack, or meal during the Sunday evening event, attendees laugh and relax with the theater professionals being interviewed. Learning more about the guest’s personal experiences and the general theatrical world, attendees are also encouraged to take part by commenting and asking questions.
The Interviewer
Valerie Smaldone has had an eclectic career as an announcer, actress, writer, and producer, among other roles. As the leader and mediator of the Sunday Salons she successfully puts the guest and audience at ease, motivating a comfortable mood.

Located at 352 West 44th street between 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattan, this is both an elegant and intimate restaurant with inviting atmosphere and delicious food. It acts as a perfect setting for these Sunday Salons, which are both informal and informative.
