Twilight, the sultry love tale of teenage girl, Bella Swan, played by actress Kristen Stewart, and dreamy vampire, Edward Cullen, played by actor Robert Pattinson, debuted in movie form in 2008. Since then, the second instalment of the series, Twilight New Moon hit theaters in 2009 and now, in 2010, the third movie version of the best-selling Twilight books, has hit the big screen.
Plot Summary of Twilight Eclipse
Eclipse, finds main female protagonist, Bella Swan, in trouble, once again, as a vicious female vampire continues on her quest for revenge. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella must choose between her love for Edward Cullen and her friendship with Jacob Black, ultimately pitting vampire against werewolf.
While the struggle over her decision between true love and friendship ensues, Bella is also presented with another life changing decision, whether to remain human or become immortal.
Aside from the drama created within the love triangle of human, werewolf, and vampire, a newborn army of deadly vampires comes forth to battle the Cullen family. Jacob comes to the aid of fellow werewolf, Leah in a grueling battle against one of the newborns, and is severely injured.
Movie Reviews for Twilight Eclipse
On its first day in the box office, Eclipse brought in a not-too-shabby, $69 million. In its first five days in theaters, the third installment of the Twilight series brought in $161 million, slightly short of its predecessor, New Moon, which brought in $164 million in the same period in 2009. Despite those incomes, movie-goers gave this newest vampire thriller a mediocre review at best.
The Internet Movie Database (IMBD) - As of July 5, 2010, Twilight's Eclipse, had a rating of only 4.5 stars out of a potential 10, based on just under 14,000 votes. Just over 35% of voters, rated the movie at 1 star, while a rating of 10 was given by just under 30% of the voting population. Comments regarding the poor quality of acting and visual effects fill the review boards. The movie rated highest, not surprisingly, with females under the age of 18.
Rotten Tomatoes - A site that sums up what critics are saying about all of the box office and blockbuster hits has Eclipse sitting at a rating of 5.6 out of 10. A slightly higher rating, than IMBD, this review is based on 185 reviews as of July 5, 2010. The consensus among voters on this website is that despite the love triangle and increased action, the film is simply full of too many characters who spout a dull dialogue.
At the Movies - Professional movie critics, Michael Phillips and Tony Scott disagree over whether Eclipse deserves a thumbs up or a thumbs down. With Phillips feeling that the film was severely lacking in a number of areas, especially in terms of dialogue and Tony feeling that it was, by far, the best of the series, thus far, a tie-breaker is brought in with expert film analyst, Ann Thompson. Thompson breaks the tie, giving the film a positive review.
Team Edward or Team Jacob
Throughout The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, main actress, Bella Swan, is faced with a number of trying decisions as she nears a life changing time in her life; graduation. A romantic love triangle results between Bella, Edward, and Jacob creating suspense for viewers as Bella struggles to make a decision between the two boys. In addition to the romance, Bella is also faced with whether to remain mortal and human or become immortal as a vampire.
Eclipse answers one of these questions to the triumph and simultaneous dismay of "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" fans. However, it leaves the other unanswered. Fans of the saga will have to wait for the two-part Twilight finale, Breaking Dawn, set to hit theaters in 2011 and 2012, or sit down with the novels.
