Are the freedoms that female human rights activists fought so hard to obtain now being taken for granted?

The success of the women’s rights movement is evident when we see females like Senator Hillary Clinton and many others running for and holding political offices. It is also evident in institutions of higher learning, religious institutions and even in the board room. Nonetheless, because young women in America have always enjoyed these liberties, are these freedoms as valued as they were by the foremothers of the movement?

Recently many news stories have spoken of the injustices concerning women in the Middle East. One such story was told on court television. It was about a woman from Iran who risked all that she had to escape that country. She’d desired that her daughters experience the freedoms of a more liberated/equal society. Her hopes for her daughters included higher education, equal employment opportunities, freedom to marry/not marry, freedom to reproduce/not reproduce and protection from sexual abuse/violence. Because the daughters came to America at very young ages, they never really witnessed or experienced the oppression their mother fought so hard to escape. Consequently, to the mother’s dismay, the daughters did not value freedom in the same way that the mother had.

The Women’s Rights Movement - Historians credit Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton for the birth of the women’s rights movement. Although the heart of the struggle centered around achieving the right to vote, these women and many other women's rights activists fought for the complete equality of/justice for women in America. Some of the battles fought and accomplishments won by this movement include:

  • The right to vote
  • Gender equality/equal employment opportunity
  • Protection of women’s rights in divorce
  • Laws/tough penalties for rape and sexual violence against women
  • The promotion of higher education for women
  • Passing of sexual harassment laws
  • Implementation of laws/services to stop/protect against domestic violence
  • Reduction of poverty and economic growth for women

Despite all of these great accomplishments, are the freedoms of women subtlety being infiltrated? Ponder these troubling facts/statistics:

  • Violence Against Women - According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, Intimate Partner Violence, 1993-2001, "more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day."
  • Lyrics About Women - A popular song by the hip hop rap artist Ludacris tells women to "Shake, shake, shake your money maker like you were shakin it for some paper." Unfortunately these degrading words are not unique in today’s music. Many artists have become popular with songs that disrespect and malign women. Unfortunately, you see young women dancing in music videos for these artists, and at clubs or riding down the street singing along to these lyrics as if they were oblivious to the meaning of the words.
  • Women and Poverty/Economic Growth - According to a report from the Center for the Education of Women/University of Michigan, "women comprise 56% of Americans over 18 who live in poverty". Possibly this is due to an increased number of single mother households, and/or the fact that men still tend to make more on the job than their female counterparts.

There have been many victories and successes made on behalf of women's rights, but there is still quite a ways to go. Women cannot forget the battles fought and sacrifices made to see to it that this, and other generations, experience freedoms the founders of the women's rights movement will never see.

So much for women's rights. I believe you are just another group that picks and chooses who you will stand up for. It brings a very very bad name to women's rights! I have never heard one woed being spoken for Sarah Palin, and last I checked she is a women. David Lettermen can call her a slut, and make jokes about her daughter getting raped, and low and behold.....not one women's right group has come to her defense. Shame on you! I am a women, and I stand for all women, not just the women who believe what I do, or who stand on my political principles.

it is very true and i agree 100%. women these days don't understand the way things were back in the 1940's and so forth. I am only 17 years old but i understand that if it weren't for those brave, corageous women fighting so hard for our rights we have today, i wouldn't be sitting in my class at school right now doing a project on this very matter.

I totally agree with you. Women today take advantage of the rights that the women before us worked their entire lives for. I am a teenage girl, and my friends don't really understand why I cant stand some of the music they listen to. Nearly every other word is comment on how women are just sexual objects for men to use. It drives me crazy.

I am a male and I think one of the biggest con jobs in history is that males are the superior sex. In reality, we are not even equal as women are the superior sex in almost every area by a very large margin.

I think the womens movement speaks for only some of us women...I guess probably the more liberal women. They will stick up for some women in the public eye forr some situations but actually stay quite when it comes to ...lets say more conservative women. Example.....Bill maher calling Sarah Palin a TWAT on his HBO special. If that had been say Ellen Degenres (however thats spelt) they would be demanding an apology! Or say when Tboes Mother wanted to share about her choice (choosing life) on the topic of abortion airing an commercial during a football game...They were up in Arms wanted it taken offf the air. I guess her choice is not appropriate to share to the womens movment. I think women do deserve to have equal oppurtunity and rights, but not just the liberal womens movement! So basically I see the womens movment at this point to be very biased and once again a wonderful thing has turned into a one sided fight full of anger and hate towards those who do not agree with it. Its such a sad world these days! Just for the record Im not a absolute conservative I am not an absolute liberal. But I would expect from the womens movment a little more fairness.

We are losing rights, but no one seems to notice that.Women are still treated like children in the eyes of government and the law.Our bodies are not our own. There are laws that say we are not adults at 21.In some states a women must be 26 or have 2 kids before she can get permament birth control. What right does the government have over telling a 21 year old woman that she isn't able or mature enough as an adult to make her own choices? Many laws are in place to protect us poor little women. It is still a man's world and women are still 2nd class in america.
