Banish stress by trying these techniques.
Even small amounts of anxiety and stress affect the body in profound ways. Anxiety and stress can cause feelings of fatigue, restlessness, and mental drain. Getting these symptoms under control can be difficult. Practicing therapeutic relaxation techniques can help tame stress and restore energy.
Guided Imagery Helps You Relax
Guided imagery uses verbal directions and sensory cues, such as sounds and smells, to help you relax and take the mind away from the present moment. It's a bit like taking a vacation, using only your imagination.
Guided imagery tapes and books are widely available, but you can start practicing with imagery even without a script. Find a calm place to sit or lie down. Close your eyes and imagine a soothing environment, such as a beach. Breathe deeply and naturally as you imagine the sound of the waves and the cries of seagulls, the smell of the salty air, the feel of the breeze on your skin and the sand sliding beneath your feet. If you have recordings of natural sounds, you can play them to enhance the experience. When you're ready to stop, take a few deep breaths, then open your eyes slowly.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Progressive muscle relaxation uses a combination of muscle tension and relaxation to increase the relaxation of the muscles and the nervous system. To try progressive muscle relaxation, first find a place where you will not be disturbed for about 20 minutes. Sit or lie down comfortably, and take a few deep, calming breaths. Tense the muscles in your feet, hold the tension for about five to ten seconds, then let go.
As you let go, feel the muscles relax and grow heavier. Next, move up to your calves, tense them, and release. Do every major muscle group in your body this way, ending with your head (scrunch up your face, then relax it). When you are ready to get up, take a few deep breaths and open your eyes slowly.
Yoga Classes
Yoga is famous for its ability to tone muscles and promote flexibility, but this ancient practice is also excellent for increasing relaxation. Find a regular yoga class you can attend or invest in a yoga DVD or book for use at home. You might try borrowing a few yoga DVDs or books from a friend or the local library to see which one suits you best. With regular practice, yoga will help lower your pulse, deepen your breathing, and allow you to face your daily stresses with increased calmness and balance.
