Many people think Malibu is inaccessible and a place for only the rich and famous. True, you are likely to see rich and famous people if you spend the day in Malibu. However, you may not recognize them, because you would be surprised at how different rich and famous people look when they are “roughing it.” But that’s another story, for another article. You should not be apprehensive. Rather, make the pilgrimage up Pacific Coast Highway to beautiful Malibu and 27 miles of scenic ocean beauty. 1. Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum

Here one will find superb views of Surfrider Beach, as well as, a museum that gives a history lesson on “old” Malibu. The Adamson House was built in 1930 for Malibu’s founding family: The Adamsons. Notably, many Adamsons still live in Malibu, and also, are active in Malibu government. Tours are given daily at the Adamson House, which emphasize the exquisite artistry throughout the house, and the use of lavish tiles.

For a lesson in American aristocracy or ancient history, one must include the Getty Villa on their list of places to go. The Getty Villa was originally intended to be the home of famous aristocrat, Mr. John Paul Getty. No expense was spared in building the Getty Villa and the architecture and gardens alone, are reasons not to miss this museum. The Getty Villa is a rare gem, in that it also houses a vast amount of sculptures, as well as, some of the most unique art pieces from ancient Greek, ancient Roman, and ancient Etruscan periods.

Dining on the ocean is a must when in Malibu. If you wish to conserve costs, try breakfast or lunch. What better place to dine than the restaurant Mel Gibson made famous, when he was arrested for driving drunk after leaving Moonshadows. Mel Gibson aside, Moonshadows Restaurant offers great food; some of the freshest fish in the West; entertainment Friday through Sunday; and many more celebrity sightings. There is also a bar area, if you wish to just have a cocktail, or an aperitif.

Bob Morris’ Beach Cafe is the only restaurant in Malibu, where one can actually sit on the sand. In fact, the only way one can access this prime piece of private beach real estate, is as a restaurant guest or a guest of a resident. Further, this is one of the few Malibu restaurants catering to kids. Adults can enjoy a cocktail on the beach, while the kids play in the ocean. Tuesdays and Thursdays usually feature live jazz. Paradise Cove is a landmark, where many movies and televisions shows have been filmed. Upon arrival, one usually recognizes the ubiquitous cliffs from many movie scenes.

A moderate hike to one of the highest points in Malibu will leave you invigorated and you may even see some whales. The walkway up Point Dume is paved for easy walking.
