The saga continues with a wedding and birth.

I must say that I am a vampire fan. I love the True Blood series, and have enjoyed the Twilight franchise so far. My friends and I decided to hit the midnight showing of Breaking Dawn this past Thursday and it was exciting to wait with the others to see what the wedding of Bella and Edward would look like. The movies have always been visually stimulating and fun to watch.

In the beginning, after reading Stephanie Meyers’ books, I was afraid I wouldn’t like the movies, but I was wrong. The first three kept me interested and hungering for each installment, so it was with much anticipation that I waited for the movie to start. This time, the series let me down and I was disappointed.

Twilight Letdowns

The scenery and interaction with the characters were the same. We all knew that Jacob would lust after Bella while she would be torn because she cared about him, too. Bella’s father would be the kind, caring, hip father that we all wanted and the wolf pack would be full of angst and loathing for the vampires. These elements were all part of this installment.

The bad part of this episode to me concerned the effort the producers used to stretch the money maker into two films. Breaking Dawn Part 1 dragged and had parts that caused me to lose my interest.

If you haven’t seen this part of the Twilight franchise yet you might want to stop reading now.

While the wedding was visually stimulating and the goodbye between Jacob and Bella kept the audience eagerly watching, the honeymoon scenes lasted too long.

Now how can I say that, when the honeymoon is what the Team Edward crowd has been waiting for? Well, the only moment that could have been awesome was short and dismal. Readers of the books know that the honeymoon night was exciting, lustful, and almost brutal. The viewers of Breaking Dawn Part 1 saw something quite different.

Twilight Honeymoon Scene

We had long minutes of Bella being nervous (after she asked repeatedly before the wedding) about being intimate with Edward. She shaved her legs, brushed her teeth, and did other time-wasting things. The actual lovemaking scene was so brief my friends and I actually turned to each other and said “what?" While leaving something to the imagination is often exciting, in this case it was a complete letdown. A few heated kisses, and embrace, and then pan to morning and feathers on the bed.

In the morning, Edward informs her no more sex because he bruised her and tore the room apart. After that, there were countless boring minutes of Bella and Edward trying not to have sex, or actually Edward trying not to have sex.

The first few attempts were cute, but it became redundant as we watched Edward teach Bella chess and play game after game. I imagine since the fourth book showed a Chess game we were supposed to make the connection.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2

Then, after Bella realized she might be pregnant, the whole “monster baby” montage was too much. The movie would have been more concise and jaw-dropping if part 1 and part 2 were one long film. The contemporary movie-going audience is used to long movies. Avatar was long and stayed at the top of the box office for several months. I am sure the Twilighters would have willingly sat through the entire movie.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 premieres in November of 2012, and the buzz is the episode will conclude the series. Of course, my disappointment with part 1 is just my opinion and judging by the money being taken in at the box office the slowness of the sequel is not keeping people away. Hopefully, part 2 will pick up the pace a little since it is the final chapter. Until then, we all have Stephanie Myers great books to read and the first three episodes which seem to run continually on HBO, Showtime, and even the FX channel.
