Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington will begin their cash for clunker appliance programs in Spring 2010. These states have set their own requirements when determining which appliances will be eligible to receive a rebate and which will not.
Texas Appliance Rebates
Texas will use a mail-in rebate system to encourage residents to purchase new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will coincide with Earth Day activities and begin in April 2010. When funds are exhausted, the program will end.
Texas eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Freezers
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Room air conditioners
- Gas condensing water heaters
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Solar water heaters
- Central air conditioners
- Air source heat pumps
Texas residents may reserve rebates online before the program begins. Consumers are required to provide proof of haul-away of clunker appliances. A bonus rebate is available by showing proof the clunker appliances were recycled through a State Energy Conservation Office partner retailer or recycling center.
Texas total funding is $23,341,000.
Utah Appliance Rebates
Utah will use a mail-in rebate system to encourage residents to purchase new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will begin in March 2010. When funds are exhausted, the program will end..
Utah eligible products include:
- Clothes washers
- Room air conditioners
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Gas furnaces
Utah consumers are required to "self-certify" the clunker appliance was properly disposed of.
Total funding for Utah is $2,626,000.
Vermont Appliance Rebates
Vermont will use a mail-in rebate system to encourage residents to purchase new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient appliances. The program will begin in March 2010 for clothes washers and refrigerators. The program will begin in January 2010 for gas tankless water heaters, gas furnaces and gas boilers, advanced registration is required. When funds are exhausted, the program will end..
Vermont eligible products include:
- Refrigerators

- Gas tankless water heaters
- Gas furnaces
- Gas boilers
Vermont consumers are required to provide proof of proper disposal in order to receive the rebate for refrigerators and clothes washers.
Total funding for Vermont is $596,000.
Virginia Appliance Rebates
Virginia will use a mail-in rebate system to encourage residents to purchase new Energy Sta coincide with Earth Day activities and begin in April 2010 and continue in 2011. When funds are exhausted, the program will end. Advanced rebate reservation is required.
Virginia eligible products may include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washers
- Gas storage water heaters
- Gas tankless water heaters
- Gas furnaces
- Air source heat pumps
Virginia does not require proof but does encourage residents to recycle their clunker appliances.
Total funding for Virginia is $7,454,000.
Washington Appliance Rebates
Washington will will use a mail-in rebate system to encourage residents to purchase new Energy Star rated and ultra-efficient refrigerators and clothes washers. The program will begin in April 2010. The refrigerator program will end in May 2010. The clothes washer program will run through December 2011, or until funds are exhausted.
Washington eligible products include:
- Refrigerators
- Clothes washers
Residents must recycle their clunker refrigerators.
Total funding for Washington is $6,284,000.
