The right Valentine's Day gift - involving love, a little thought, and some knowledge of his tastes - can help make this the perfect Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is a popular holiday with a rich history that includes both Christian and pagan roots. Finding Valentine's Day gifts for men can be particularly challenging, as so many of the gifts available seem to be directed solely at women. However, with a little knowledge about his tastes, finding a gift that he will love – but one that still says "I love you" – doesn't have to be such a challenge.

Heartfelt Gifts

Valentine's Day gifts don't have to be expensive. In fact, some of the best things to give really are free. Giving homemade "gift certificates" is a wonderful and creative idea to use this Valentine's Day. Instead of a gift card to a retailer, give him gift cards to be redeemed from you. Ideas to put on the gift cards can be a back rub, his favorite dessert, a homemade meal, specific chores around the house, a guys' night out (with no notice), or a day of doing an activity he wants to do. Get creative and make sure to honor the certificates as he redeems them.

"Guy" Gifts

While it may seem unromantic, finding a "guy" gift that he will enjoy can be the perfect idea. Wall decor signs for his garage or man cave are becoming more popular and are usually appreciated. Signs with hundreds of different sayings are available – a few examples include: "What Happens in the Garage Stays in the Garage," "Warning: George's Man Cave," or "My Cave, My Rules."

Alcohol and drinking accessories are also an option. A bottle of his choice drink or a collection of unique beers can be given. Accessories include things such as beer mugs, martini mixer set, shot glasses, or a four-bottle spirit dispenser for making mixed drinks.

Finally, tickets to sporting events or concerts are another "guy" gift that will be much appreciated. Individual game day tickets or season passes are available. Sporting events to consider include racing, football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. Tickets to a concert he will enjoy is a non-sport option to keep in mind.

Electronics and Watches for Him

Electronics and other gadgets should not be overlooked on the quest for the perfect Valentine's Day gift. If purchasing a specific electronic item, make sure it is the model or meets the specifications he wants – don't guess. Video games and DVDs are easier to pick out than electronics. Consider DVD boxed sets, such as Star Wars, Back to the Future, Spiderman, X-Men, or James Bond movies. For video games, make sure the game fits the gaming system he owns, such as PlayStation or X-box. Including unlimited time to watch the movies or play the video game is also a wonderful addition to the original gift.

Watches are a traditional item for men, but should not be overlooked. When choosing a watch, it is best to follow two rules: go for the higher-end items and stick to classic styles. Brands to consider include Bulova, Movado, Citizen, Seiko, and TAG Heuer. Rolex is also a good brand, but it is fairly expensive.

Risque Gifts

Almost all men appreciate risque gifts – and the attendant invitations – and Valentine's Day is an appropriate day to give them. With an entire industry of ideas out there, it is easy to find a gift in this area. These can include clothing, board games, books, and more. Only go in this direction with gifts if both parties are entirely comfortable with this option.

A Holiday Men Can Enjoy

Valentine's Day seems to have a reputation as being mostly for women – and being a headache for men. However, both Christian and pagan history base the story of Valentine's Day on men. In reality, Valentine's Day can be the perfect chance for a woman to show the man in her life how much she loves him. Taking his tastes into account and adding a pinch of love can make this Valentine's Day a holiday he can actually enjoy.
