Valentine's Day is another terrific holiday for creating fun crafts and recipes with your children. The edible heart Valentine is made from delicious candies for a fun treat. This kids' craft is perfect for school, family, or church parties with a Valentine's Day theme. It is an inexpensive way to make homemade Valentines for exchanges with family, friends and classmates.
The following craft supplies create one edible heart. Be sure to calculate the number of recipients this craft will be created for to ensure the correct amount of supplies is at hand. The amount of candies that are needed will vary based upon size of the pipe cleaner and each candy piece.
Valentine's Day Craft Project Supplies
- pink, red, or white pipe cleaner
- individually wrapped Life Saver candies (other circular candies with an open center will work)
- hole puncher
- 5 inches of red ribbon
- pen or marker
- large Valentine's Day stickers (blank hearts work well)
Valentine's Day Craft Project Instructions
- Keep the Life Saver candies individually wrapped for freshness and health safety. With the hole puncher, create a hole through the paper and the open center of the Life Saver. If the Valentine will be eaten immediately, you can remove the candies from the wrapper and omit the hole puncher. Using a heart shaped hole puncher adds a cute decorative touch.
- Shape the pipe cleaner into a heart shape. The two ends should meet at the top of the heart without overlapping. The pipe cleaner can be shaped around a heart cookie cutter or other heart shapes. For a more detailed heart, add a second, smaller pipe cleaner in a heart shape to the center of the first heart. Ribbon can be used to attach the two hearts together.
- Slide the Life Savers onto the pipe cleaner heart. Make sure to leave about one half of an inch at each end of the pipe cleaner to attach the heart together.
- Press the ends of the pipe cleaner together. To hold, wrap the ends around each other once. Tie the ribbon tightly around the ends to keep in place and tie a standard bow.
- Write the recipients name on the Valentine's Day sticker and place onto the candy heart. The completed Valentine's Day heart craft can also be turned into an easy decoration by adding a ribbon loop to the top.
Licorice or Twizzlers can be used in place of the pipe cleaner for a completely edible heart. Another great candy for this craft project is mini pink marshmallows. The hole puncher easily creates the needed holes through each marshmallow. When using Licorice, Twizzlers, unpackaged candies or marshmallows, the finished craft must be consumed as soon as possible. Some classrooms will not allow unpackaged treats for health and safety purposes.
This craft is fun for a classroom project for parents as well. This is an easy, adorable Valentine's Day craft project for kids of all ages.
