On Jan. 9, 2010, Fox News reported on a memo prepared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) about 22-year-old Jared Loughner, the suspect in custody for the Tucson shootings.
A gunman opened fire in a Safeway store parking lot the previous day when Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was holding an event. Six people were killed including Chief District Court Judge John Roll and nine-year-old Christina Taylor-Green, granddaughter of former baseball pitcher and manager, Dallas Green.
Thirteen others were injured, some critically, including the congresswoman from the 8th Congressional District in Arizona who is believed to have been the intended target of the shooting spree.
Loughner “Possibly Linked” to American Renaissance
According to the memo, the ideology of the American Renaissance is “anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government) and anti-Semitic.”
The memo also notes that Giffords “is the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government [in the state of Arizona]. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to the immigration debate.”
American Renaissance
According to the group’s website, of everything that divides people, race is “the most prominent and divisive” factor. The group claims that race and racial conflict “are at the heart of the most serious challenges the Western World faces in the 21st century.”
American Renaissance (AR) publishes a monthly magazine, entitled American Renaissance that can be purchased either in hard copy form or electronically. The magazine has been published since 1991.
AR also has a store on its site where it sells books, video tapes and DVDs. Among the books offered for sale are The Affirmative Action Hoax by Steven Farron and Race, Evolution and Behavior, by Phillipe Rushton.
AR also holds biennial conferences. The next one is scheduled to be held on Feb. 4-6, 2011 in Charlotte North Carolina.
Shooting May Have Resulted from Simple Hate
Whether the possible link to American Renaissance is established and if it is, whether that link played a part in the shootings remains unknown at this time. Reports indicate that Loughner is not cooperating with authorities and his exact motives are not known. From what has been released so far from his MySpace and YouTube postings, Loughner is difficult to make sense of. It could be that he is just mentally ill and/or simply a hater. We do not yet know the cause that led him to do what he is alleged to do. We do not yet know if he shot Giffords because she is Jewish or because he is anti-immigrant.
This has not stopped many in the media from speculating that Sarah Palin or the Tea Party is somehow responsible for the rampage when there is absolutely no evidence that he is a Palin supporter or a member or supporter of the Tea Party movement.
The Department of Homeland Security obtained the information regarding Loughner from his computer that was seized after his arrest.
