Take a Field Trip to a Horse Ranch - Let Ideas Compete
A Western themed teaching unit provides inspiration for many hands-on elementary activities for the classroom.

Saddle up for lots of educational fun. Western themes inspire lots of fun elementary activities for the classroom and help students catch a glimpse of life in the Wild West. The age of the students affects the exact activities planned for the Western themed unit. Many activities and theme ideas adapt easily to fit different age and ability levels.

Dress-Up Area

Dramatic play elementary activities give students the chance to experiment with different roles. A Western dress-up area gives kids the props they need to pretend they are in the Wild West. Cowboy hats, flannel shirts, cowboy boots and chaps work well as outfits. Other props such as stick horses, lassos and pretend campfire round out the play area. Include some Western themed picture books to provide inspiration for play activities.

Dress up and dramatic play are not only fun for the kids; these activities allow them to put themselves into the shoes of another person. In this case, the kids gain a better understanding of Western life through play.

Western Theme Field Trip Ideas

A nearby horse ranch makes an ideal field trip location for the Western themed teaching unit. If there is a horse ranch within a reasonable distance, check to see if it offers tours for student groups. For many kids, the field trip gives them their first glimpse of a real horse. Upon returning to the classroom, extension activities continue the educational value of the field trip.

Look for a location nearby with a historical reenactment of the Wild West days. These locations are often located in rural areas with old fashioned buildings. Actors in Western costumes reenact common activities that took place in that time period. This gives the kids an real-life look at the Western lifestyle.

Western Themed Writing and Art Activities

Creating a classroom newspaper based on Western themes and historical events ties in both writing and social studies. The kids write newspaper articles from the perspective of people living in Western times. This requires them to do research and take into account the facts they've already learned about the lifestyle. All of the articles are combined to create a newspaper. You can often get blank newsprint from the local newspaper to use as the background for this project.

Designing wanted posters combines the Western theme and art concepts. A photograph of each child serves as the base for the poster. The children add the details to create the poster, including the wording and image. Add specific requirements for the wording on the poster to turn it into a creative writing activity for the elementary students. When hung around the room, the Wanted posters create a Western feel. They also work well on a bulletin board for the duration of the educational theme.

Have Fun With Western Themed Units

The Western theme allows kids to explore a different lifestyle. It connects well with social studies activities. Incorporate the Western theme throughout the curriculum from learning centers to writing to field trips.
