If you are searching for a 1960s hotrod or a 1950s coupe, you may need help to find classic cars to buy. Where can you go to buy a classic car?

Finding the 1969 Chevy El Camino of your dreams is not going to be as easy as finding a 2005 Nissan Maxima for sale. But you can track down your dream car, and find sellers of classic cars.

Classic Car Dealers

Specialty car dealers exist. Some car dealerships specialize in classic cars. These are not as common as other used car dealerships, but are often found in upscale areas. While many used car dealerships might have one or two classic cars on their lot, most cars there are newer and not classic cars. However, luxury vehicle dealers might have more classic cars on their lot.

Craigslist

The popular classified ads site Craigslist is arranged by geographic area, allowing you to pick a Craigslist for your state and region and search locally for classic cars. You can browse listings under cars for sale individually. You can also use the search function and identify the exact classic car you are looking for.

Craigslist posters often upload pictures of the vehicles they sell, too, which gives you better information before deciding to see the car in person. Craigslist has a wide variety of postings that are mainly direct from the seller, instead of the road-ready car you might expect from a dealership. Instead your search result could turn up "project car" or "for parts" cars instead of better condition classic cars.

eBay

The eBay auction site has a separate category for cars. Be mindful of where the owner and the vehicle is located. Hundreds of classic cars are available for purchase on eBay. You can bid in the auction format or use the site's Buy It Now option after narrowing your search to the cars you are looking for. Oversees or cross-country sales have their own concerns over buying locally.

Classic Car Shows

Chances are that some of the classic cars at local classic car shows might be for sale. Owners fix up a vehicle and move onto the next project. The next time you are at a classic car show, see what's for sale. Talk to the owner to see if they are selling, or jump at a for sale sign in the window of the vehicle.

Classifieds

Many larger daily newspapers' Sunday editions have a large classified section that includes a category with subheadings for classic cars, vintage cars or antique vehicles.

You can also find classic cars in separate classified products that just list car ads, such as Auto Shopper in New Jersey.

Often these media outlets have an online site that list cars for sale. Search newspaper's websites for the classic car you are looking for.
