It can be confusing trying to figure out exactly where to mail personal income tax returns. The IRS has several processing centers across the United States, and state tax returns must be mailed separately. In this article, learn how to find out exactly where to mail federal tax returns like Form 1040 and Form 1040A.
Where to Mail Tax Returns – IRS Mailing Addresses
As noted in the Suite101 article 2009 IRS Tax Refunds, there are multiple IRS mailing addresses. A combination of the taxpayer’s place of residence, tax return form, and tax refund status determines exactly which mailing address he or she should use.
The applicable year’s instructions for each federal individual income tax return (Form 1040, Form 1040A, Form 1040-NR, etc) should contain a complete list of IRS mailing addresses for that particular tax return form. However, there is a way to easily look up return processing center mailing addresses for the fifty states online as well.
Need to Know Where to Mail Form 1040 in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012? Check irs.gov Annually
On the IRS website, irs.gov, there is a page where individuals can search for federal tax return processing center locations by state. This information is searchable by clicking on a map or by choosing from a list of states (plus D.C.).
At first glance, it appears unclear as to whether this feature has been updated for the current tax year; however, at the bottom of the main landing page and each individual states’ page, there is a “Page Last Reviewed or Updated” date stamp. As of February 2009, the main page’s date stamp indicates that the listing was updated in late December 2009, which means it should list current tax year mailing addresses
In future years, it would be a good idea to double-check this date stamp, as a taxpayer does not want to use outdated information for current year tax returns.
Mailing Address for 2009 Personal Income Tax Returns
In a January 2010 announcement (IR-2010-016), the IRS announced changes to IRS processing centers for the 2009 tax year. According to the IRS, it had to juggle which paper returns go to its Austin, Fresno, and Kansas City processing centers in order to manage expected tax return volume at those locations.
According to the IRS, any taxpayer who uses the envelope that comes with current year tax return instructions can rest assured that they are using the correct IRS mailing address (as it’s pre-printed on the envelope).
