The Brompton is a finely engineered hand-built folding bike offering both practical compact portability and a lively riding experience. Owners love them. Here's why.

The engineer Andrew Ritchie invented the first Brompton folding bike in the late seventies after seeing a Bickerton folding bike and thinking he could do better.

The result was a fresh design with a unique folding action hiding the chain and sprockets between the wheels resulting in a cleaner, safer fold.

Early prototypes were bought mainly by friends and Ritchie struggled to raise capital to progress his invention further until 1987 when the first full production Mark 1 model won the Best Product award at the Cyclex exhibition.

Today the Brompton has evolved into a superlight machine with several handlebar designs but it retains the principle of a chic folding bike using high quality materials that is fast and easy to ride.

Key Features of a Brompton Folding Bike

  • Compact and practical fold in less than 20 seconds. A folded bike measures only 22.2" x 21.5" x 10.6".
  • Small and lightweight 16” wheels on all models.
  • Easy to carry by the saddle when folded with no loose, dirty or vulnerable parts exposed.
  • Three different handlebar styles according to riding style and use.
  • Hand built in London using 1200 different parts, 75% of which are unique.
  • Single speed or multi-speed (2, 3 and 6) options.
  • Superlight weight between 9 – 12.5 kg depending on model.
  • Key models come with lights and mudguards as standard.
  • Available in a variety of stylish colours to suit the individual.
  • Brompton bikes hold their values well so are a great investment.

The Brompton Classic Foldable Bike

Built to last and be as light as possible without compromising handling or safety, the Brompton is still manufactured in London to maintain the highest quality and confidence of the consumer. The company once tried a joint venture with an offshore partner to expand into alternative markets but this failed when quality was compromised.

Why Cyclists Love their Brompton Folding Bikes

A Brompton is something of a way of life to regular users, a “personal transport solution” as Brompton call it. Brompton cyclists will fold and unfold their bike several times a day whether commuting, popping to the shops or just having fun.

They rely on the sturdy yet lightweight design and relish the freedom it gives at any time. And it’s pretty cool to fold up such a neat little package in front of friends.

Buying a Brompton Folding Bicycle

A Brompton will cost between £470 and £1200 depending on the model which puts it at the upper end of folding bike prices but great quality comes at a price.

If looking for a cheap folding bike for occasional use, supermarket chains have plenty to offer but for high class quality, great riding performance and superb, compact and above all easy foldability, the Brompton offers the “best of British” and could become your best friend.
