There are a myriad of must-see movies set to hit theatres this winter.
Summer is the typical season when all the Hollywood blockbusters hit theatres but that does not mean we'll be left with nothing worth seeing this winter. Here's a list of what will be out there for your viewing pleasure and the tentative big screen arrival dates.
Drama Flicks
- Funkytown - This gloomy movie set in the disco seventies in Montreal follows several lives that intertwine, twist, turn and ultimately burn in a made-up universe whose atomic rise is overshadowed only by its spectacular fall. (Planned Release Date - December 17, 2010)
- The Fighter - Mark Wahlberg stars in this story of the early days of the life of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward. Christian Bale plays Micky's trainer/brother. (Planned Release Date - December 17, 2010)
- Country Strong - Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw star in this story about the dynamics of a country music star's life (played by Paltrow) and career resurrection. (Planned Release Date - December 22, 2010)
- True Grit - The remarkable Coen brothers have returned with another film, this one about a 14-year-old girl, a U.S. Marshall (played by Jeff Bridges), and a Texas Ranger (played by Matt Damon) who are trying to track down the man who killed her father (Josh Brolin). (Planned Release Date - December 25, 2010)
- Somewhere - This Sophia Coppola movie stars Stephen Dorff, Benicio Del Toro, and Michelle Monaghan. It portrays the story of an actor whose life is chronicled in the tabloids until his 11-year-old daughter comes into the picture and he starts questioning his life. (Planned Release Date - January 7, 2011)
- London River - This flick tells the story of the aftermath of the London bombings of July 7, 2005. It follows the life of a farming woman searching for her missing daughter and a man who came from London to search for his missing son. (Planned Release Date - January 13, 2011)
- Biutiful - Javier Bardem plays a man on the road to redemption who struggles with reality and the afterlife. (Planned Release Date - January 14, 2011)
- Blue Valentine - Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star as a couple who are at a crossroads in their relationship. (Planned Release Date - January 14, 2011)
- The Dilemma - What would you do if you saw your best friend's wife making out with someone who wasn't your best friend? This movie starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James answers that question. (Planned Release Date - January 14, 2011)
- The Rite - Anthony Hopkins plays an American priest who goes to Italy to study at an exorcism school. (Planned Release Date - January 28, 2011)
Thriller Movies
- The Debt - Helen Mirren stars in this flick as a former Mossad agent who tried to capture and bring a famed Nazi war criminal to trial. Thirty years later, a man claiming to be the criminal has resurfaced and Mirren must find out the truth. (Planned Release Date - December 29, 2010)
- Season of the Witch - This movie is set in the 14th century and deals with witchcraft, knights, monks, and a woman who is believed to have paranormal abilities that are linked to the Black Plague. Nicolas Cage stars in this period movie. (Planned Release Date - January 7, 2011)
- Unknown White Male - Liam Neeson awakens from a coma and discovers that another man has taken over his identity. (Planned Release Date - January 7, 2011)
- Cabin in the Woods - This movie is more of a horror than anything else and deals with five college students at a remote cabin in the woods. They are terrorized as per typical Hollywood standards. (Planned Release Date - January 14, 2011)
- The Dark Fields - Bradley Cooper plays a failing writer who takes a new drug that gives him sharp focus and immense self-confidence. His spectacular rise to the top of the financial world is wrought with complications. (Planned Release Date - January 21, 2011)
- Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - Sinister creatures live under the stairs of the home a young girl is sent to live in. This flick stars Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce. (Planned Release Date - January 21, 2011)
- The Factory - John Cusack plays a cop hunting down a serial killer in New York when his daughter goes missing. (Planned Release Date - January 28, 2011)
- Drive Angry 3D- Nicolas Cage plays a father seeking revenge after the murder of his daughter. (Planned Release Date - February 2, 2011)
Comedy Movies
- How Do You Know - This flick stars broken-hearted Reese Witherspoon who is being pursued by two men, played by Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. (Planned Release Date - December 17, 2010)
- Little Fockers - This is the long-awaited sequel to Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers. Pam and Greg now have two little Fockers and Pam's dad (played by Robert De Niro) continues his reign of paranoia on Greg's life. (Planned Release Date - December 22, 2010)
- No Strings Attached - Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher play a couple who want to be monogamous but are struggling in their quest. (Planned Release Date - January 21, 2011)
Action Flicks
- Tron - This movie is a play on the famed video game Tron. It's the story of a 27-year-old man who is haunted by the death of his father, a famous video game developer. As he searches for the truth about his dad (played by Jeff Bridges), he gets pulled into a digital world. (Planned Release Date - December 17, 2010)
- The Green Hornet - Seth Rogan stars as the masked superhero in this flick. (Planned Release Date - January 14, 2011)
Family Films
- Yogi Bear - A movie about the most famous resident of Jellystone Park is finally hitting the big screen. Don't worry - Boo Boo makes an appearance. (Planned Release Date - December 17, 2010)
- Gulliver's Travels - Yes, this is the story of the large man's adventures on the island of Lilliput, the book we all ready back in high school. It stars Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, and Amanda Peet, among others. It's not yet rated but it is being pitched as a family movie as well as an adventure and a comedy. (Planned Release Date - December 22, 2010)
- The Illusionist - This flick tells the story of a struggling magician who encounters a little girl that believes he is truly magical. (Planned Release Date - January 21, 2011)
This is by no means an all-inclusive list but hopefully it has you craving some mouth-watering movie theatre popcorn!
