Stress in the workplace can quickly lead to depression leaving you feeling trapped, but reflecting on communication skills can improve the situation greatly

The effects of workplace stress are apparent, and can take a toll on virtually all facets of life, even leading to depression. When it comes to employment, simply removing yourself from an unpleasant situation is often not an option. Even more frustrating is the fact that the problem often seems to centre around someone else; an overbearing boss, or an aggravating or aggressive coworker. While this may be the case, it isn't necessary for you to feel completely helpless in the situation. Take charge of the situation by reflecting on your practices. Taking ownership of the solution will provide a sense of empowerment, and have the effect of reducing stress in itself.

Reduce Workplace Stress With Effective Communication

Effective communication stems from clear understanding. Not only is it important to understand others' perspective, but it is also equally important to understand your own perspective and how that might be perceived by others.

Taking time to put focus on learning about yourself is not a venture that many people invest a lot of time into, but this comes at a great loss. The single best way to increase the effectiveness of communication is to increase your understanding of yourself and of others.

There are a whole host of free online personality assessments readily available like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, for example, but it's what you do with your Myers-Briggs online results that counts. Pay attention not only to what the results say about your personality, but also to what the results say about your compatibility with other personality types. Focus on possible areas for conflict, and try to gain some insight as to what is causing your workplace stress.

Open Minded Communication Increases Motivation in Everyone, Reducing Workplace Stress

Have you ever come up with a brilliant and innovative idea at work only to have it shot down before you even have the opportunity to articulate it? Nothing kills motivation and morale like the sense of not being heard. Don't fall into the negativity trap by approaching group brainstorming with a guarded or blocked mindset.

Have an open mind when listening to colleagues' ideas. If you take a genuine interest in what someone is saying, chances are, you will be able to find value in the idea. Not only will an innovative idea be beneficial to the entire team, but it will leave the contributor feeling validated, and you marked as a leader within the group. Open minded communication increases motivation in everyone, and the results of this will be far reaching.

Reduce Stress and Relieve Tension By Having a Solution Oriented Focus

Not every idea will be worth implementation, but every idea can be used as a starting point for discussion. Make group brainstorming more productive by having a solution oriented focus. By focusing your attention on possible solutions rather than on the problems themselves, you are clearing the way for more open and accepting lines of communication.

Stress at work is a reality in nearly every job. The key is to not let that stress build to a point where it is infringing on other parts of your life leading to depression and other health issues. Often this can be accomplished with a little self reflection, and some focus on improving communication. Be a leader! Demonstrate effective communication with your coworkers; you will find that more often than not, the favour will be returned.
