Lesson 4: Lesson 4
Miniature of a Silver-haired lady.

Portrait miniatures have been around for centuries. They were mainly a token of love in the early years. I believe they are rising again to be in fashion.
Minature of a Silver Haired Lady.

A modern day portrait miniature will have that "old world" look when painted on porcelain. I find the porcelain medallions (which come in various sizes) are ideal. Then we have extra small porcelain tiles.

Suggested colours for this study:
Flesh N01. Blonde Flesh. Ivory Flesh. Flesh Shadow. Blue Grey. Shiraz.
Brushes: Small Pointer. Small Square Shader. Mapping pen.
Open Medium.

  1. Features are placed in with a Small pointer and Flesh Shadow. ( All pencil may be used first of all)
    FIRE. 800C.
  2. Wash Ivory Flesh over the entire face. Place the shadows in with Flesh Shadow (make sure your brush is flattened for even strokes) strokes must be even and close together and then dabbed with a small silk wad to soften and blend. Wipe out the whites of the eyes. Blue Grey is used to paint the hair and wipe out the highlights.
  3. Blonde Flesh is used to establish the shadow areas and Shiraz (pink) for the cheeks and lip colour. Highlights are wiped out and softened to blend. Place the eye colour in with Blue, accentuate the lashes and eyebrows wit Brown and a tiny touch in the nostrils.
Wipe out the pinpoint highlight in the eyes.
with Flesh N01.+ Flesh shadow, deepen the corners of the mouth. The shadows of the hair can be accentuated. Paint the frock and background colours of your choice. FIRE.

  1. To achieve a translucent appearance to the skin, was Ivory Flesh over the face and wipe out the prominent highlights.
  2. With a mapping pen, place the pupil in with Blue + Flesh Shadow. Sharpen the dividing lipline and darken lip colour. NOTE: to use a pen and paint, make a small, thinner consistency of colour and fill the pen nib with colour, place lightly onto the porcelain area.
  3. Check the details and FIRE.

I am sure we all have a silver haired lady in our life and this study can be applied to painting your own personal portrait of her.

I hope you enjoy the experience.
Aileen.
