than you do.

Hi Anne,

I just saw this on Animal Planet and, of course, thought of you and your birds. Have you ever used anything like this? Is this a good idea or a gimmick? The birds on the show didn't seem to mind wearing clothes.

Here's an article that tells about the people who invented the flight suit.

Hi Linda!

Yup, I've seen these things and had to wonder what it did to the bird's tail/vent feathers when all that *stuff* is caught in the birdie diaper. And the thing the birds wear with a leash...that might work in some circumstances. But I don't think it's a good idea for birds who aren't intensively trained to accept them.

I know that there are folks who use these things with their birds and they are supposed to be safe and comfortable. But I don't think my guys would enjoy wearing them at all. And I'd like to see somebody try to make them. LOL!!

Sounds like the flight suit inventors are raking in the cash, though, doesn't it? I wouldn't mind that part! hehe.

Thanks for dropping by and posting this. I just happened to stop by myself and was happy to see a message from you!

hugs,

Hehe!

I have never heard of bird diapers. Interesting concept. smile They even put them on parakeets? I don't think my doves would put up with them either. They'd probably fuss and try to take them off! Well, back to work. Have a great day.

Hi Renie,

You liked that part, huh? hehehe! I'm afraid anybody who tried to dress up these birds would end up bloody and in need of stitches. LOL!

Actually, Pancho will wear a paper hat until it falls off. But I don't attach it with anything, I just balance it on his head. hehe! And Rio, if he thinks it's *his* idea, will let me drape a tissue across his back like a blanket. And of course, when we done playing with the paper hat and the tissue, the birds shred them. smile

Birdie diapers...I just don't know about those. What happens to the bird's feathers when the you-know-what is contained in the diaper? Seems like it would cause more of a mess that it would prevent. Anybody who has experience with these things should post a message! I'd love to hear about it.

Have a wonderful day, Renie, and get back to work. LOL!

I bet Pancho looks pretty cute in his hat. How 'bout some photos?

The FAQ section of the Flight Suit site explains how the design of the suit (a v-shaped panel or something) keeps the deposits safely away from the bird.

Personally, I think it sounds like a lot of work to dress a bird. But I guess there are some situations that it would be helpful to not have to worry about bird "signatures."

Hope you hear from someone who has used the outfits successfully. (Wonder how many of the outfits sold are being worn?) Still, I bet you're right about the hardest part would be convincing the bird to play dress up.

Have a good day.

Hello, Linda, nice to see you again. Thanks for starting this interesting discussion. smile

Actually, I have tried to get a picture of Pancho wearing his hat...have you ever tried to get a nosy bird to sit still?? Every time I get everything 'just so' he turns his head and off tumbles the hat. hehe!

For comments from someone who has used bird diapers and flight suits, see the post about bird behavior. She mentioned that her birds wear them successfully. I hope she'll tell us more about the experience. smile

Have a great day, Linda, and thanks again.

Hi!
The flight suits are actually nice. My birds have worn them and eventually got used to them. (I must admit though since I was bitten severely by my hormonal green checonureure, who was the easiest to put these on, I haven't used them. My othconureureJendayday has a much bigger beak and can bite much harder I suspect. Two episodes of blood were enough for me.)The suits are made from polyester and are rather pricey. The suits are a snap to clean and dry quickly so one doesn't need but just one or two. The company sells them at a discount in packages of three which helps the price somewhat. This company even has sweaters as well as costumes for the holidays! My birds were older and thus a little harder to convince to wear these but when the birds wore these then they could go anywhere with me in the house and they liked that!! I think that the bescenariosrio would to start from early babyhood aeverytimeime the bird came out of his cage, on went the suit. This way the bird would associate the suit with coming out for playtime and would naturally put on the suit without fuss, maybe?? I really liked not having to clean up birdie poop as my birds would not stay on theplaygymsyms but come and see what I was doing, even with their wings clipped...have feet will travel. My green cheek is very agile and can climb up my pant legs fairly fast... or sit on my shoes and then poop in my shoe laces which was fun...NOT! I learned I had better wear pants when the birds were out as it is easier to clean clothes then shoe laces! I didn't get the costume suits, just the plain and printed suits for everyday. If you have a young bird I think they are worth trying as it really does make the mess factor much easier to deal with.I don't know about the bigger birds but my little birds seem to poalotlot!

Thanks so much for all your comments! I've always wondered about these items and your personal experience with them answered a lot of questions for me. I'm sure all the other readers learned a lot, too!

Sounds like your two guys are a fun handful. LOL! Aren't conures just the best little birds? Except for the biting, of course. Ack. But they are so smart, pretty, loud, exasperating, stubborn, fun birds. Hehehe!

I loved reading about your feathered buddies. Please visit and post often. The more, the merrier!

hugs,

I have just started puting my new cockatiel in a FlightSuite. She/He is not to sure about it yet and is always picking at it, but it says they will do that alot at first and it will fade when they get used to it on them. Hopefully my cockatiel will get used to it. It is very easy to clean and doesn't make a mess inside. Sometimes I wonder if my cockatiel will start to not like spending time with me if she/he will have to wear this suite. Hopefully not. I have a photo of her/he in the flightsuite but I dont know how to post a picture.
