» Kevan - Diabetes and Depression, stress, anxiety

My husband lost his job several months ago due to an alleged incident at work. He was falsely accused and was terminated from his position. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes almost two years ago and has not had any prolems with keeping it in check until this event happened. He has had numerous problems with his feet getting ulcers since he was fired. Is there a clear cut relationship between stressful events, depression and anxiety and the physical effects this can have on a diabetic?

Depression, stress, and anxiety are all virtually joined at each other's hips, sometimes as the cause, other times as the effect. We're only just beginning now to understand how this relates to physical illness such as heart disease and diabetes. Although it would be impossible to prove in court that the stress caused by your husband's wrongful dismissal led to a worsening of his diabetes, it is fair to make that assumption in your own mind. Looking forward, you can probably help your husband's diabetes by helping him cope with his stress and anxiety and depression. Keep in mind I'm not a doctor, but feel confident in asking your doctor these kinds of questions and of expecting intelligent answers. Hope this helps.

In response to message posted by Kevan:
Hi there Kevan, There is now some clinical evidence that diabetics are prone to depression. Depression then leads to a feeling of being run down, and worthless, which reduces the bodies immune system, which in turns makes us ill. Of course this doesn't just apply to the diabetic, however things are slightly worse for the diabetic due to their condition. As you will be aware diabetics need to keep their blood glucose under excellent control, to avoid future complications (which usually arise after about 10-15 years). Ulcers are a typical diabetic occurace, and need to be treated carefully. As for the dismissal from his job, I would seek legal advice as well as seeking help from either http://www.diabetes.org OR http://www.diabetes.org.uk who will be able to advise you whether you have a solid enough case for legal proceedings. Diabetics are often (even in these days) discriminated against, and this should really be dwindled out by now.

All the best Dave
