» Jaster - PetCo manager

Me and my girlfriend bought a rat from PetCo, it was a small common rat the kind used for feed. Well I got it home and stuff and noticed she was sneezing and weezing and I got worried knowing this could be an early sign of a respiratory infection. So We took her to PetCo and said that we wanted them to send her to the vet because their fifteen day guarantee said that Pez (the rat) wouldn't get sick. The MANAGER proceeded to be rude in telling my girlfriend that it was nothing, but I told him it was probably an upper respiratory infection. Guess what! I was right, if it had been up to the jerk our little Pez would've died. God I hate him. Sorry I had to get that off my chest.

I know what you mean. I found an adorably loveable rat from pet co that I thought would make a great pet. When I handled him he was excellent and wanted to explore. He of course had a sneeze and a little bit of a weeze when I brought him home. The Petco employees made an appointment for him at their vet, because I havn't had one established in my area (I moved) yet, and I didn't want to pay for the treatment that they would have to pay. I fell in love with this rat, and he died a week later as a result of an upper respiritory infection. I think petco needs to have someone evaluate how they keep their small mammals because the cages didn't look the ventalated and the bedding not proper for the animal. That and to have 6 medium sized boys in a 10 gallon aquarium isn't very suitable for their needs. I really think someone needs to investigate and prove their moto of "Our pets come first" completely wrong.

I understand your viewpoint, but what petco does is expected. They stock rats and mice in the main as feeder items; I have tried breeding a male and a female myself, since spending 8 dollars a week on snakefood can be expensive, and they always die. Management at petco don't see rats and mice as potential pets, in my experience.

I bought a rat from PetCo, after BEGGING my fiance to let me have one. The rat promptly bit him hard enough to draw blood (after I swore they would never bite!) We took the rat back the very next day, and the manager said "What, the snake wouldn't eat it?" Um, no...I wanted it as a pet! I walked straight out after getting my money, and went to PetSmart. I bought 2 there, and my fiance loves them! They were twice the price (because they were bred for pets, not food), but it was worth it. As a matter of fact, he told me if we made a bigger cage I could get more, so we spent the last 2 days building a cage and got 2 new babies from PetSmart (8 weeks old). We've never had a problem with the other ones. I wouldn't ever reccomend buying a pet from PetCo! I love the way they were treated at PetSmart, as well as me. They had 4 at most in the cages, which look like tanks from the outside (to keep fingers out), but are screened on the inside (it's like a box of animals with an inside you can go in to pick them out, with a salesperson of course). The lady there knew how old they were, how much they had been handled, etc. She answered every question I had (and, knowing a little about rats, I asked some I knew, to make sure she knew what she was talking about, and she did). All in all, that was sooooooooo much better IMO. Just adding my story. smile Kim

hi there, we have 7 rats in all and always buy them from a local pet shop and never have any trouble, just recently we were near a big pet co store and saw 2 babies in there, we decided they looked clean so we would get them, when we got them home we noticed they were both sneezing, i know that from experiance that can be put down to nerves, so i thought i would see how they were the next 2 days and then contact the vet, when we checked them again we found little meggy dead in the bottom of the cage and patch barely alive, i was devastated cause i love my girls, we scooped up patch quick got her warm and managed to get some fluids down her and some antibiotics from the vet, luckily a week later she is puttin on weight and is well but i feel bitter we lost meg, i have now been told by a few people including my vet not to buy animals from that shop as they are not looked after and always seem to suffer respitary infections, its sick and un fair animals are treated like this and i shall be making a complaint to the shop but nothin can bring our little meggy bak.in future i will stick to my normal pet shop. thnx for reading hi everyone
