» jerrib - Are you saying

that when I buy something online - even if encrypted when I purchase it, the info could end up in the wrong hands if the company does not protect it at their site?

Yes Jerri - I'm afraid I have to answer "yes"!

That said, credit card is at least as safe online as in more "normal" use, well in most cases use of credit card can be even more secure in online purchasing.

My intention is rather to make people aware and to think. It's not any "strange" - just think about your own computer, someone can come into that one if you don't protect it.

Let's be honest and admit that most companies would most likely not have secure servers and encrypted email transfer of data if they did not know that most customers would not be willing to give CC information if they had not.

I only want to take this one step further, as today's solution is NOT good enough if the data is not as secured on the receivers computers as online. But as long as nobody tell the customers about that, they don't ask about it and the companies don't implement it.

Just wait and see - if more start to ask about this then it will not take long time before the sites come up with information that "your data will be stored in encrypted form" along with the information about secure server and encrypted data transfer.

When that happens, then a basic handling of sensitive information are correctly secured. But as I said - first the customers must be informed and think about this. Then ask and "pressure" the companies they plan to deal with, as it's first then implementation of this part will come.

My strongest advise is never to purchase anything online before asking the companies how they handle and store your data in their offices!

» jerrib - Naive Was I

But not anymore. I always purchase things over the internet with my credit card and never flinch a bit. Now I'll think twice!

Thanks.

I don't feel safe.

But at least I'm a bit more educated!
