Brian Carpenter I would like to offer a suggestion, this is just a possibility, but maybe more...

1. I know of no actual source that confirms just how Nostradamus arrived at his prophecies. Maybe he was a crystal ball gazer, and maybe not.

2. As you pointed out Florence, Nostradamus was of Jewish ancestry, and, as I recall, born into a well to do family. He became a doctor, and had education. I suggest he would have had an excellent knowledge of Hebrew.

3. A work now exists, called "The Bible Code" by Michael Drosnin. It purports to show a hidden code in letter sequences in Hebrew, in the old testament. And it is supported by at least one scholarly article that preceded it. The "code" appears to be prophetic in nature.

4. My point: What if Nostradamus discovered that code, which seems to show future events? The Talmudic scholars of old said that everyone's life and death was contained in the Talmud. What if that is not just a story, and expresses a truth about a code? And if Nostradamus saw that, and used it?

Thanks Brian. What an interesting suggestion. I'm going to do some research and see if I can get a handle on the idea. I'll see if I can find a copy of the book you mention and, if it's not too scholarly for a lay person to read, I'll see what he has to say. And thanks again for the suggestion.

Florence, if you get the Edward Hamilton book catalog, I think it is available there at a very reduced discount.

You will not find it excessively scholarly, but there are references to serious scholarly works in it. Good luck!

» Dubh_Sidhe - First Visit

Hello, Florence. This is Lady Dubh Sidhe at "Folklore" (found under Humanities) and the little people and I enjoyed our first visit with you. Interesting article. My current article has to do with numbers/numerology. The number system in the Talmud is fascinating and, I too, wish I were scholarly enough to understand it. You have acquired a regular visitor, and I hope you will visit me weekly.
Wishes and Blessings.

» Dana_Decker - Bible Code

Brian, I read the Bible code, and did find it quite interesting. Although, in the past couple of years, I've heard several accounts of very knowledgeable people that scoff at it. As a matter of fact, the man that Drosnin "worked with" (I didn't go get my copy and look at his name) doesn't even support him.

I personally neither believe it or disbelieve it, though it does make for interesting reading.

Well, the only way to know for sure that the code is true is to have a copy of the program yourself, and use it to determine a future event.

For those who are interested in Nostradamus, I recommend Stewart Robb's " Nostradamus on Napoleon, Hitler, and the present crisis ". It was written in WW2, and remains, in my opinion, the best book on Nostadamus prophecy ever written. Look for it in used bookstores.

Florence, how about an article discussing the problem of reconciling divination/prophecy with free will?

» FlorenceC - Free Will

This is an excellent idea, Brian. It's going to take some research, though. So I can't promise just when the article will be written. But I will be giving it a lot of thought.

» BettyPine - Fun reading your article and all the comments it's garnering

Great article and lots of info. I love the graphics too.

He did live in a very unenlightend time. It's amazing he didn't burn at the stake..but he had friends in high places.

I just read "The Mammoth Book of Nostradamus and Other Prophets by Damon Wilson" the son of Colin Wilson who wrote "The Outsider". It was a great read, and yes...I read the WHOLE thing. The thing about Nostradamus is it seems like a lot of prophets he is eerily uncanny in his predicitions but there has not been a lot you can do to change the events before they happen. Not yet anyway.

Another person mentioned in the book is Edgar Cayce and he seems he helped by healing many people. I have him on my book list as next biogrpahy read. He sounds fascinating and I'd love to know more about him.

» FlorenceC - Edgar Cayce

Hi Betty,
I'm glad you enjoyed my Nostradamus article. That sounds like an interesting book you mentioned.

I did write an article on Edgar Cayce, if you'd like to read it. It's here:http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/prop...

» BettyPine - Hi Florence

I try and get back to the columns I subscribe to and read any new comments the editor may have left for me...and I have to say that most often I find they do. I'm gonna go read the Edgar Cayce article right now. Thanks.
