» Barbara Nicholson Bell - Thanks to your husband!

The photos are delightful.

The advice you've given for cleaning your machine before beginning is good for every sewing project, especially if your machine is packed away for a while between uses. If it's been several years (as in my case, a few years ago) it might be a good idea to take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a professional tune-up.

The professional tune-up is a good idea. It's very frustrating to get into a sewing project and have the machine act up! Thanks for your comments.

sewing machine for maintenance. It's an important "must" if you use it a lot.

I, too, have a Kenmore and have been using it big time for over 20 years. It was made by Brother and has been a great machine.

Enjoyed the flower photos!

They no longer have parts, sigh, so my machine is not being repaired. I'll be looking for a gear-driven machine. Any suggestions?

» loveisjoy - Sewing machine recommendation

First off, just want to say that I really enjoy your articles, and always find helpful information! I've completed a few quilts now, and am ready for a new machine.

I'm graduating from a totally basic $80 sewing machine to something with a few more bells & whistles. However, since I still consider myself a newbie-to-intermediate quilter, I don't want to pay any more than $500 for a machine. (Someday, when I'm a pro or win the lottery, I'll go overboard and buy a top-of-the-line model) ;-)

There are so many different manufacturers and models, I'm wondering if you have any personal favorites or caveats you can share.

Thanks.

Anyone care to jump in on this? I had a Kenmore for about 15 years without any problems. It was not a top of the line but not the bottom either. I did take good care of it, cleaning and oiling. It got a lot of use. Now I have Janome QC 6025, have had it for 3 years, no problems, but it is noisy. I got it for the quilting stitch (which I seldom use!) It is the midpriced Quilters Companion. Check my article on sewing machines for some basic suggestions on desirable features.
