Searching the topic of May/December romanceson the Internet has become fruitless, since I
keep coming up with dating sites :op, but
finally one did come to mind ---J.J. Astor
and Madeline Astor, who sailed on the Titanic
in April 1912. I think this will be a fascinating
topic for April 2000.
If anyone has any more names to contribute,
please feel free, as I would like to have a
May/December romance in line for next May
and next December.
It is my endeavor to get my topics in order
so that I can go weekly with this column in

Just a passing thought on May-December love... My best friend and I plan to marry soon. He is 28 years older than I am and it is O.K. because we connect on every level. We have been friends for more than ten years and without putting on airs or pretending, but rather with quiet honesty and shared values' our love has come to a full blossom, a trust has developed, and kindredness that we can't imagine living without again. In the real world, men fear aging more than death itself. The loss of hair, muscle tone and the all important "mojo" have long frightened the maturing male.
But in the mystical realm of Hollywood, reality seems to be suspended. May-December romances have heated up the silver screen, even though Robert Redford, Harrison Ford and Sean Connery have all been criticized recently for their young on-screen love interests.
Yet offscreen, even more bizarre tales of romantically linked stars have filled the pages of gossip magazines across America.
Most recently, media columnists ran amok when Catherine Zeta-Jones became Michael Douglas' fiancée. The 30-year-old actress could have had any man she wanted, especially after donning a snug-fitting cat suit in last year's "Entrapment."
Tabloids were further put into a tizzy by Zeta-Jones' pregnancy.
Although the announcement broke the hearts of men around the globe, most people were astonished by the age difference between the two stars.
However, this seemingly strange occurrence of younger women falling in love with older men has been going on for decades in Hollywood.
In the early years of cinema, Charlie Chaplin earned notoriety not only as a lovable tramp, but also as a hot item among teen-agers. At the age of 28 he married 16-year-old Mildred Harris.
After a much-publicized divorce seven years later, Chaplin found love again, this time with Lita Grey. Chaplin married the 16-year-old after she conceived his child.
Chaplin then remarried two more times. At the age of 44, he married 19-year-old Paulette Goddard and took playwright Eugene O'Neil's 18-year-old daughter as a wife when he was 59.
But the greatest May-December romance may belong to the immortal pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
The couple met while making the film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's "To Have and Have Not." While many have celebrated the Bogey and Bacall romance, she was a mere 19 years old while he was a whopping 44.
The age difference didn't stop the two from marrying in 1945, though, as they became one of the most celebrated couples in Hollywood history.
But some age-defying romances are more controversial.
By far, the most disturbing marriage belongs to rock-a-billy icon Jerry Lee Lewis who married his 13-year-old cousin when he was 23. His "great balls of fire" yielded two children from the relationship.
Director Roman Polanski was also interested in females on the early side of womanhood. The "Chinatown" director married Sharon Tate in 1968, though there was a 10-year age difference. In 1979, Polanski was arrested for allegedly having sex with a drugged 13-year-old girl. He later fled the United States to avoid jail time.
That year, Polanski also fell in love with 15-year-old Nastassja Kinski, the star of his film "Tess."
However, in 1989, the director married 24-year-old Emmanuelle Seigner after meeting her on the set of "Frantic," and the two remain married.
Not nearly as unsettling, but disturbing in its own right, is the affair between 64-year-old Hollywood funnyman Woody Allen and his 29-year-old wife Soon-Yi Previn.
Allen and Previn became romantically involved in late 1991 while Allen was still shacked up with his longtime love Mia Farrow. But the infidelity alone wasn't what got people talking. Previn was Farrow's adopted daughter.
Though their affair made the headlines of tabloids nationwide for years, the couple eventually married in 1997.
Warren Beatty and Annette Benning have become one of the premiere power couples in Hollywood. The two became romantically entwined while filming "Bugsy" in 1991. They married a year later, despite a 21-year age difference.
But the award for the biggest disparity in age goes to buxom former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith and former husband J. Howard Marshall - a man 63 years her senior. Unfortunately, their romance only lasted a year before Marshall died.
Céline Dion decided to mix business with pleasure when she married her longtime manager Rene Angelil in 1994. Apparently her heart couldn't go on without him, even though he is 26 years older.
Tony Randall, the star of television's "The Odd Couple," gave another meaning to that phrase when he married Heather Harlan in 1995 - a woman 50 years younger.
Old age didn't stop Dirty Harry from taking a younger wife either. In 1997, the 66-year-old Clint Eastwood married 31-year-old news reporter Dina Ruiz.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has also shown a fondness for younger women. In 1993, the then 39-year-old Seinfeld began a romance with 18-year-old Shoshanna Lonstein. However, their love affair ended in 1997.
But Seinfeld rebounded last year and married 26-year-old Jessica Sklar.
Decaying rock legend Mick Jagger also seems to be getting plenty of satisfaction from younger women. The 56-year-old Rolling Stone singer was married to 43-year-old model Jerry Hall, but recently had his marriage annulled. The relationship ended because Jagger allegedly fathered a child with 30-year-old Lucianna Morad in 1998.
But the "American Gigolo" himself may be the king of cradle-robbers. The 50-year-old Richard Gere was once married to the 34-year-old supermodel Cindy Crawford. He is now dating former "Law & Order" actress Carey Lowell, 38, who announced her pregnancy Tuesday.
James Doohan of "Star Trek" is also expecting a new baby. The 80-year-old thespian recently announced the pregnancy of his 43-year-old wife.
Maybe it's money. Maybe it's fame. Maybe these older men have that certain something that eludes their younger counterparts.
But no matter what the reasons for these women to ignore the age discrepancy, perhaps their unconditional love could stand as a testament to the rest of the world.
If nothing else, these love stories prove that age is nothing more than a three-letter word - at least in Hollywood.
