» marque - A Very Basic Question

Hi all,

I'm trying to grow this corm - for the second time. When I called up Dutch Gardens and asked my question the person left the line and "checked," but my guess and their answer didn't agree. I'd like a 2nd opinion, at least.

If anyone reading this has grown them successfully, my question is simply: in which direction do I plant the corm? They always seem to have a couple of "prongs," or white protrusions, that I thought might be the part of the plant that grows up to become the stems. However, DG says they definitely go DOWN, as in roots.

Is DG correct?

TIA!

Mark in DC

P.S. Hey, Marge! I finally posted something! smile

» Marge_Talt - prongs up

Hey Mark!

Welcome to Gardening in Shade! Super to have you on board...guess you got tired waiting for me to ans. your last and decided to hunt me down in my lair :-) Promise I'll write soon - been trying to find where I put the name of that shrub first...put it in a really safe place, it appears.

Well, I haven't grown this, but I did find a nice page of cultural information done by the Pukekohe Research Centre on Sandersonia aurantiaca. Here's a quote that answers your question: "Sandersonia grows from a forked tuber with two growing points; each growing point develops a single shoot and roots. After shoot development, a new tuber (daughter tuber) is formed." So plant your prongs up.

» marque - A Basic Answer!

Wow, thanks, Marge! Not only for the info, but for the link as well. Highly informative.

Good thing I put markers where I planted these guys. Should be easy to lift & re-orient them.

Thanks again! This is one of those rare times when my instincts were right...

» Marge_Talt - rare and gratifying moments

You're most welcome, Mark. If you've got them marked, it shouldn't be a problem righting them at this point.

When in doubt, you can always plant the bulb, tuber, corm on its side; that way it can go in either direction and it will.

Aren't those rare moments gratifying? I savor them - they are so few and far between:-)

» Jofa - Flowers, Littonia Modesta and Sandersonia

Hello world,

We grow sandersonia and Littonia modesta flowers and tubers. We would love to do some exporting around the world.
Most of you will be familiar with the sandersonia flower I guess. The Littonia is a flower which I have not found on the Internet yet. We grow this flower commercially and export the flowers to Asia.
If any of you is interested in a photo please let me know.

Regards

John.

» Jojo - Littonia

John

I would love to see a flower of Littonia modesta.

The nursery I work for here in B.C., Canada occasionally imports bulbs, corms and tubers for growing on in pots. I've never heard of this flower but it may be of interest to my boss.

We also grow Sandersonia aurantica (and plant the pointy ends up), lots of Eucomis varieties and other bulbs, but really our main focus is perennials and vines. Anything that is new and different and has a chance of survival in our relatively mild and wet climate is of interest.

We grow all the plants of for sale to the local market only, including Vancouver, Victoria B.C. and surrounds. We don't actually ever do any mail order.

You can contact me here or at jojo@suite101.com. If you want you can e-mail the picture to either Marge or myself and we can post it here.

» Marge_Talt - Littonia Modesta and Sandersonia

Hello, John and Welcome to Gardening in Shade!

I would also love to see a photo of Littonia modesta flowers. Have no clue what this plant's flowers look like - the best I could come up with in a web search was an image of the leaf tip tendrils.

As for outlets - in addition to Jojo's nursery - have you talked to Paul Christian? His nursery, Paul Christian - Rare Plants in the UK, has probably the most incredible list of bulbs I've seen. If you're basically interested in US nursery outlets, email me privately and I'll send you some email addresses for some of the nursery folk I know who might be interested so you can contact them.

Also, Gary Buckley over at Alpines and Bulbs, here on the Suite, has a lot of contacts in the bulb world - including nursery people...he might have some suggestions for you.

As Jojo says, email either one of us your image and we'll put it up in this discussion so we can all see what this plant is like - certainly sounds intriguing with climbing leaf tendrils!

John, AKA Jofa, has sent me this image of the Littonia modesta flower. Lovely, isn't it?

He says the plant can grow 6 to 7 feet tall with 10 to 15 flowers!!! Can you imagine the impact a clump of these would have in the border!!!

He's also told me that he'll have some more pix in the not too distant future, so check back to see them as I will post them here.
