» CarolWallace - Ipomoea

have you tried Glasshouse Works? http://www.glasshouseworks.com

They seem to have most of the ipomeoa.

I dug my 'Blackie' up and potted it - thought it died but something just sprouted from the center. I also rooted three cuttings - all putting out green leaves because we have no light in this house. I'm giving them a few more days to develop strong roots, though, before I try potting them up.

» LadyB - I ALMOST lost the margaritas

I put the three cuttings in a glass vase on my dining table and they all made roots in about 3 days. I think I potted them at 5 days. The 'blackie' has never flagged at all, but the margaritas drooped spectacularly. I grabbed them immediately and popped them in my propagating chamber where a mist-head goes off every time the screen flapper dries out enough to rise up and set off the switch. It took a good week to revive them, but they're back on the bench in the greenhouse now looking quite splendid. To me they look like Purina Whitefly Chow, so I'm going to keep an eagle eye on them during the winter.

Sonni, you're close enough to me that I may be able to take more cuttings (especially if they're 'flowing' all over the greenhouse by winter's end)

PS I saw the new Logee's catalog when the Philipstown Garden club was here at Glynwood for their meeting. TOTAL DROOL-FEST. Also started clambering around in the Thompson & Morgan seed catalog yesterday while waiting to have a tire fixed. (And Carol wonders what we're going to do all winter.....shopping frenzy in the seed catalogs!!!)

» Marge_Talt - sources etc.

Good idea, Carol....I'd forgotten about Glasshouseworks - they do have a huge selection.

Re: light...can you rig a flourescent light of any kind? I use an old drafting board light over my tiny little heat mat inside, which I use for starting stuff that would like bottom heat. Although the lamp hasn't been changed in eons, it still provides enough light for most plants - plus, you can adjust the height pretty easily.

» Marge_Talt - misting chamber jealousy

Well, Lady B...you have me jealous as all get out! A misting chamber! One of my heart's desires.

I got my Thompson & Morgan a few days ago and it sits on one of the piles on my desk, tempting me...but so far I haven't cracked it. Saving it for those long winter nights.

Looks like I need to get my derrier in gear and pot those cuttings I've got ASAP. That's one of my downfalls when I stick something in a glass of water to root - I wait way too long to get it potted up and end up with a mess of tangled roots.

» Sonni - Waiter, another Margarita, please....

Thanks for the great welcome back. It made me feel great. I miss watching everyone's great excitement and enthusiasm.I think it's the special fertilizer that makes your gardens grow! (Man those pictures of all your gardens are amazing)

Lady B - are you sure you didn't have some Findhorn fairies at that dining table where you put the cuttings? Three days! Unbelievable. I think the drying out of soil was my problem. My apartment gets very dry in winter -- even with a large aquatic turtle tank and 45 gallon fish tank right in my living room. The water in those tanks evaporate like crazy -- so this year I'm going to run the humidifier while I'm at home.

I'm going to see if I can get down to that garden before it all goes away and see if the Ipomea's are still growing and try to get some more cuttings. You've encouraged me to try again.

Has anyone tried adding gelatin water to their cuttings? I know gelatin is supposed to be a plant booster -- I was wondering if a weak solution would help strengthen the plant itself - even though the roots grow so quickly. Think I'll give it a try.

Talk about cuttings -- a man sells small bouquets of exotic Hawaiin flowers and leaves in the street where I work. I noticed that the green and pink leaf stalks grew roots within a week and a half of being in the vase -- so it's now growing very nicely in my apartment. I guess these plants adapt well to low light. I just bought another bouquet -- 'cause now I know I'll have pretty giner/bird of paradise and then.... a new exotic plant! It's probably possible to root the ginger's and/or others as well -- maybe the gelatin here?

Well, one must do something in the winter....

Thanks for being here you suite folks.

Regards, Sonni

» LadyB - faeries indeed!

My dining table is so infested with Findhorn-like faeries I can hardly sit down! (hee hee) But yeah, everything roots like mad around here.

My prop chamber just came with the Glynwood Greenhouse. It's really an old-fashioned one with very simple working mechanical parts. When my greenhouse supply salesman saw it, he was SO enchanted that there was still one like this in use that he gave me a new brass mister head just for the nostalgia of it. The head clogs up periodically, and it all stops misting if the electricity goes off. But I am TOTALLY spoiled with it. If something doesn't germinate IN THERE, those seeds be dead BIG TIME.

Re: Thompson and Morgan: while they DO have one of the most inspiring catalogs around, they're often out of a third of what you've ordered and their germination rate is truly stinko. Sometimes I think they're trying to carry such a vast selection that they don't pay much attention to quality control, but they're always worth a try.

» LadyB - I grumble...

....but I still order from T&M every year. Like I said, it's worth a shot. I order quite a bit from Johnny's Select seeds and do as much of my vege seed from the FedCo See CoOp in Maine and Seeds of Change as I can. For odd herb-things, Richters has an incredible selection.

And oh yeah up there? What do you think I have to do when the electricity DOES go out around here??? I have to stick my head in the prop chamber and SNEEZE ever 1 3/4 minutes!!!

» Marge_Talt - grumble LOL

Oh, Lady B....LOL...cackle, snort....mental image of you with head in misting chamber sneezing every minute...heh, heh....I would love a photo of that to post!

Re: Thompson & Morgen...I have bought from them over the years, but have found Chilterns, who truly do carry more unusual things. T&M once used to be a much better house, I think, before they started really catering to the US trade. I remember when you actually sent your order to the UK. Used, also to be able to order from Unwins in the UK.

Howsomever, you do have to go a long mile to beat the luscious photos in T&M's catalog...perfect for dreaming by. I make copious lists from them each year and order about every 5 years. Right now, I've got a fridge full of seeds from various exchanges that need to be planted before I actually acquire more.
