» LadyB - Pro-Mix is a brand name...
...so Pro-Mix comes in a variety of different forms. I have always found them somewhat soft from an over abundance of vermiculite which I feel breaks down too much and gets 'weird' like you say over time. The professional catalog is off in my hort office somewhere, but I'll try to find it and give you the 'recipe' of the Metro-mix 510. It just feels real good and holds up well.-- posted by LadyB
» Marge_Talt - Pro Mix and Metro-mix 510
Lady B,I would love to have the recipe for Metro-mix 510. For that matter, I'd be interested to know where it can be bought. Is it wholesale only? Local to you only?
I'm not in love with Pro Mix, it just seems to be the best I've been able to find around here...would like to find a better mix that I didn't have to doctor so much to get it more like what I want.

» Cottage_Garden - I use ProMix too
but mainly because I can get it at cost from a local nursery. Then I doctor it up -- and then it still goes mucky fast anyway. I use it mainly because it is clean and available.-- posted by Cottage_Garden

Exactly my reasons, Barbara! Now, Lady B...tell us more about the better alternative...-- posted by Marge_Talt
» Sonni - Boo Hoo :(
On Saturday, during my hectic schedule, I decided to run down to the park where I first saw the Ipoemia Batatas Margarita (yeah,... I'm learning...) to see if I could get a few more cuttings before they all vanish for the cold weather.Much to my SORROW, I saw that all the Sweet Potato plants, Margarita, Blackie, and other summer plants were PLOWED AWAY.... I guess to clean up for the winter.
And I felt SO guilty that time about taking cuttings - if I knew that they were going to pull everything OUT, I would have brought hedge clippers with me!
There I was, standing by the Hudson River, a dreary grey day with the weather starting to feel like winter .... and I was blue..
But, instead of getting depressed, I focused instead on the wonderful evergreens and tried to get my mind OFF the plants that were just GONE.
Oh well, looks like I will ordering all that stuff next year from a nursery.I guess I have all winter to see which one is closet to me.
I'm hoping that all those gardeners who work on the Wagner Park took as many cuttings as they could carry.
Aloha! Sonni

» LadyB - Sometimes, you just let it go.....
I have just two plants of the margarita and one of blackie. You have one baclony. There will be cuttings.I just hope it all got composted, then they're not wasted at all.....
Even though you are farther south than I am, I would imagine by now they would have been frost damaged anyway and would have made LOUSY cuttings.
Just thank them for all the pleasure they gave you, all the neat stuff you learned, and the new friends you made all because 'Those Gorgeous Acid Green Leaves' caught your eye!

Sonni...it's times like these when you focus on the fact that if winter is here - SPRING WILL COME! Lady B sounds like she will have excess of those children for you come spring. It's winter here tonight - down to about 18F according to my thermometer in the window. And, I am pleased to report that the new greenhouse is staying at about 45F....yea! And I haven't turned on that section of elec. heat yet.

» LadyB - oooooh, isn't THAT a nice feeling, Marge
Bunch 'o years ago I was renting a LARGE 25' x 100' greenhouse for my ill-fated herb nursery, and I'll never forget the night the heat went OFF. My partner and I stood out in the 15* snowy night staring at the dry dip-stick. We were OUT of oil.I can't TELL you what a relief it was to go back out the next morning to see we'd 'HELD' at 45*. I didn't lose anybody.

» Sonni - Yup - you are right
Yup.... those gorgeous acid green leaves definately played their role in my destiny to meet all of you in this cool, warm, intelligent, funny and diverse group.AND, if all goes well, I get "babies" to boot.
It is interesting that these plants are not listed in the catalogs that I have looked at.
Sounds like your green houses are in good shape...
45 degrees is a pretty good temperature for plants AND people. Not too cold to admire your winter family.
Regards, Sonni

» CarolWallace - I'll have Blackie cuttings,too
I ignored my poor cuttings too long and the stems rotted - but I also dug up the mom and it is doing splendidly. So you have all kinds of potential plants!-- posted by CarolWallace
