Film Westerns
The Old West, a period in American history lasting roughly from the mid-1800s to the 1920s, continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of cowboys and cowgirls, young and old, through Western films. In 1903, American film pioneer Edwin Stanton Porter expanded the archetypal dime novels depicting the Wild American West into a 12 minute, one reel film, creating the first classic Western: The Great Train Robbery. Many more train robberies followed in theaters around the world, along with shootouts, mob lynchings, cattle drives and singing cowboys, all captured in classic Western films. Take the saddle off the horse, scrape the mud off your boots and come inside for a tale or two about the movies of John Wayne, William S. Hart, Buster Crabbe and more in Western Classic Films.
