French Guiana Travel
Europe in South America. French Guiana is not a country but an overseas department of France. With it come the French language and the euro. While accommodation, food and transport may add up, the total travel budget may not be that shocking thanks to the large number of tourist attractions that are free of charge:
- Numerous trails into the Amazon or along the Atlantic coast, most of which are perfectly doable with kids.
- The launching of rockets at Europe's Space Centre in Kourou.
- Watching wildlife such as poison-dart frogs and sloths on the trails, waterfowl in the old harbour of Cayenne, and sea turtles on the beach of Awala-Yalimapo.
Not free of charge, but worth a visit nevertheless, are the ruins of France's penal colony on Devil's Island and in Saint Laurent de Maroni.
