Lesson 5: Tenant, Landord and City Responsibilities

Tenant Responsibilities

Tenant Responsibilities:

To ensure that you as a tenant live in a clean, habitable and safe apartment or dwelling, you should:

  • Report all gas leaks to Con Edison immediately.
  • Report all hazardous conditions (asbestos, lead paint) to your landlord or his/her representative immediately.
  • Report all water leaks to your landlord or his/her representative immediately.
  • Check safety equipment such as window guards, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and elevators. Report any problems, immediately to your landlord or his/her representative.
  • Provide access to your landlord or his/her representative for emergencies. When possible provide a contact person or contact phone number if you can not be home.
  • Vacuum your apartment on a weekly basis.
  • Damp wipe down all surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom areas on a daily basis.
  • Set out garbage for super to pickup or take garbage to designated collection areas on a daily basis to prevent vermin and insect infestation.
  • Provide annual information to your landlord that allows him to properly install and monitor safety equipment (smoke detectors/ window guards).
  • Report any change in tenant residency to your landlord or his/her representative.
  • Become familiar with information about the various housing laws, codes and regulations.
