Stenciling 101

By Carol Wallace

Lesson 1: Why Stencil? How and What to Stencil and What to Use

Assignments

Make sure you have chosen some basic materials before Lesson 2 begins. You will need tools for applying paint, as well as the paint itself, paper towels, a pencil, and a big blank practice surface. For best learning try to get at least two types of stencil paint - a liquid form and at least one crème.

Suggested Reading
If you have been able to borrow or purchase it, read Chapter 1, "Before You Start", pp. 11-31 in The Complete Stenciling Handbook by Sandra Buckingham. While this course won't stress all of the different tools and paint types in this chapter, it will mention many of them, and will cover them in depth in an Intermediate stenciling course.

Color is a personal choice, and a lot of your choices will be determined by the decor you already have - but a bit of theory never hurt and can often help a lot.
