Betting Rounds – The period during a poker game when players have the opportunity to fold, bet (call), check, or raise.
Big Blind – An initial mandatory bet which is posted by the second player to the left of the dealer. The big blind is equal to the table’s lower betting limit.
Blinds – Initial mandatory bets placed in the pot by the first two players to the dealer’s left.
Button – A round plastic disc with a “D” on it. It is used to identify the present dealer in the game.
Buy-In – The minimum amount of money required by a player to participate at a particular table. The buy-in amount is equal to ten times the table’s lower betting limit.
Call – To equal or match the last bet amount.
Check – To waive the right to initiate the betting in a round, but to retain the right to act if another player bets.
Community Cards – The cards that are dealt face-up in the middle of the table which are visible to and shared by all players.
Flop – The first three community cards.
Fold – To quit a hand in the middle of a game and forfeit the chips in the pot.
Pocket Cards – The player’s two cards which are dealt face-down. Also referred to as hole cards.
Post – Placing chips in the pot.
Pot – The accumulated amount of chips bet that will be awarded to the winner of a hand.
Raise – To increase the amount of a bet made earlier by another player.
River – The fifth and final community card. Also known as Fifth Street.
Small Blind – An initial mandatory bet which is posted by the first player to the left of the dealer. The small blind is equal to one half of the table’s lower betting limit.
Table Limits – The predetermined betting limits at a table.
Turn – The fourth community card. Also known as Fourth Street.
