Lesson 2: Stars and Space

Activity

Star Window Decoration

Be sure to ask an adult to assist you with this project.

What you will need:

*two pieces of wax paper approximately 12 inches x 12 inches.

*old crayons

*old cheese grader

*an iron

*a needle

*piece of fishing line, twice the desired length

What to do:

Place one piece of the wax paper on the counter.

Use the cheese grader to shred the old crayons.

Use the shaving to create a star-shaped design on the wax paper. (Color doesn't matter. Use your imagination.)

Lay the second piece of wax paper carefully over your design. Be careful not to move the crayon shavings.

With an adult's help, use the warm iron and press on the top sheet of wax paper.

You will see the crayon shavings begin to melt. (If they don't, your iron isn't hot enough, but don't make it too hot.) They will form a star-shaped design.

Let cool until you can touch it without burning yourself. (Ask an adult to test it for you.)

While the star design is still warm, but not hot, thread the needle with fishing line.

Pull the needle through the point of the star that you desire to be at the top.

Allow to cool thoroughly.

Hang your beautiful creation from the window of your choice.

Enjoy!
