Animals, writing and the arts are my passion.

For the past 13 years, I've worked as a journalist and artist in the Boston area, and now, in Southwest Florida. I've raised and trained dogs for a significant portion of my life, and I currently serve as a foster parent for a handful of animal shelters and rescue leagues. I'm also a green living enthusiast.

I'm a professional pet care writer, journalist and a Suite101 senior editor. You can find my other writings on the web at:

  • FreePrintableCouponWebsite.com - It's all about — you guessed it — coupons, promo codes, extreme couponing and money saving tips. On The Free Printable Coupon Website, you'll find printable coupons, hints on how to save money and current promo codes. I recently added an Online Store Circular Directory and a Printable Coupon Center, which regularly features 100+ printable grocery coupons and other offers. What's not to love?
  • TheSickDogBlog.com - This is my pet blog, where I provide information on how to help a sick pet and how to keep pets healthy!
  • GreatLifeQuotesAndSayings.com - Looking for a great quote? My new quotes blog has some great sayings on life, love, seasons, holidays and just about anything else you can think of!

I can also be hired to write original pet articles for your website or blog!

Mia's Special Needs Animals

In total, I have a total of 20+ resident animals (6 dogs, 21 cats, four birds and more!), with an array of other pets that come and go as part of my work with fostering programs. I also worked for an animal shelter for over a decade and I currently specialize in the care and training of ill pets with handicaps or special needs.

Oh, and did I mention that most of my animals have special needs or chronic illness? My animals are blind, deaf, epileptic, diabetic, three-legged, with severe spinal defects and other conditions like FIV, Trigeminal Neuritis, paralysis, Addison's Disease, cancer, a form of Protein-Losing Enteropathy known as Lymphangiectasia and separation anxiety so severe that it once led the dog to chew off a portion of his tail. That was the last straw in his old home; so with just half a tail, Cooper the anxious Pit Bull came to live with us.

I currently care for eight feral cats and strays. I actively work to rehabilitate, spay/neuter and care for sick and injured stray cats, feral cats, feral kittens and wildlife orphans.

Needless to say, I've learned a lot over the years from my special needs animals and I look forward to sharing that knowledge with Suite101 visitors.

WBZ, Interviews and Other Work in the Field of Journalism

I have a bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Communications from Simmons College.

I currently work full-time as a Suite101 Senior Editor and web writer. For nearly 15 years, I've worked as a journalist, freelance photographer and graphic designer. My work has appeared in on array of publications and websites, including The Boston Globe, CNN.com, CBS.com, Dog Fancy and The Animal Print.

I'm a now-former broadcast editor and script writer for WBZ Newsradio1030 AM, a CBS affiliate in Boston. Prior to working at WBZ, I spent more than a decade working as a reporter and editor at daily newspaper publication in suburban Boston. I'm also member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the New England Press Association (NEPA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

In early October 2008, I had an exclusive interview "The Dog Whisperer" Cesar Milan to discuss his new book A Member of the Family, his fifth season of his National Geographic Channel series, The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan, and an array of other dog training issues. Also in October 2008, I had an exclusive interview with PETA founder and author Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her organization PETA and her new book, One Can Make a Difference.

More recently, I interviewed the brother of Connecticut chimp attack victim Charla Nash, who provided an update on Nash's recovery. She has since received a full face transplant at a Boston hospital!

If I'm not in the company of a non-human companion, then I'm probably busy overseeing some aspect of my fledgling pottery company, Piggy's Pet Pottery. My work in this field has not only been rewarding on a creative level, but it's also informed many a story on animal art and pet novelties. My pet pottery has also provided me with new opportunities in the field of journalism. I've had the chance to attend and report on many high profile dog shows, including the 2007 AKC Eukanuba Tournament of Champions - yes folks, I'm a true multi-tasker!
