Modern British History
It is arguably in the modern era that Britain has experienced some of the greatest changes in its history. The two World Wars saw the decline of the Empire and huge social and political advances, such as the birth of the National Health Service and the introduction of female suffrage.
Domestically the twentieth century has seen huge changes affecting the constituent countries of the British Isles, including the establishment of an independent Ireland and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom and, latterly, a process of devolution bringing a degree of political independence to Scotland and Wales and changing the political landscape.
