North American Musical Theatre
The first English language theatrical musical produced in the United States was The Black Crook, which premiered September 12, 1866 in New York. It marked the beginning of North American-made musical productions starring high quality performers, which ably competed with imported works. Going through its many phases, musical theatre featured operettas, extravagent reviews, musical comedies, and musical dramas. Vitally important to the industry are off-Broadway and smaller community presentations featuring road companies or local troupes as well as innovative independent musicals introduced by new composers and producers.
