If someone asks me "What do you do," I may say "architecture," but I think "I garden."

I've tried my hand at a number of things, from being a technician in the legitimate theater to fiber art, jewelry and enamels, with interior design thrown in for good measure. Some of these have paid the rent and others didn't increase my bank account perceptively. Architecture pays the rent now, but all my spare creative energy belongs to my true love, gardening.

After moving around from pillar to post, courtesy, during my youth, of the U.S. Army, I'm now firmly rooted in the mid-Atlantic region, outside of our nation's capital.

My husband and I built our house in the woods thirty years ago. We only cleared what was absolutely necessary to fit the house in. Ever since, I have been clearing bits and building gardens. The gardens that had sun to begin with are now growing more shady every year as the trees get bigger. I'm continually carving new gardens out of the woods and gardening in the shade is the name of the game.
