Two of the world’s most controversial topics, religion and politics, can cause sparks when they converge. Either alone can stimulate heated debate, but together, the effect is incendiary. A core tenet of Western liberal democracies is the separation of church and state, but not all the world agrees. In certain countries, religion and politics are viewed as inseparable.

Predictably, questions abound:

  • What happens when a state has one religion enshrined into its constitution?
  • What of the rights of a religious citizen in a secular state, or a secular citizen in a religious state?
  • Should national policies be based on the lobbying efforts of religious groups?
  • Should religiously-affiliated groups have influence in the UN?
