Ghostbed and DreamCloud Comparison
Although they take very different approaches to their mattresses, both companies have the same underlying philosophy. We’ll explore the major differences and similarities.
How are Ghostbed and DreamCloud alike?
First, the similarities.
Adaptive layers are the modern answer to sleep issues of the past. Contouring and supporting layers create a system that both cradles and pushes back against your body.
The top layer sinks further where you’re broadest, such as the shoulders, and the bottom layer keeps the body from sinking into the mattress and over-extending the spine. It pushes back, so you feel the right amount of support without forcing your body to sleep in a straight line.
Another philosophy is offering only one or two mattress models and improving those instead of rolling out a wide range of mediocre models. Both companies have a small variety of styles, but they spent a lot of time in development to create them.
The final philosophy is a direct-to-customer model. Both of these are going to be luxury mattresses offered at much more affordable prices because there’s no third-party retail markup. You can get a higher quality mattress without a significant hit to your wallet.
Everyone knows there’s a sweet spot in the middle of the mattress that’s the most comfortable one. When your mattress has reinforced edge support, even the sides of the mattress feel like that sweet spot. You can also sit on the bed without feeling too much compression.
Both companies have reinforced edge support, so you shouldn’t experience any significant compression laying or sitting on the edge of the bed. Good news if you have a partner or you frequently sit on your bed.
Both companies have taken steps to reduce the amount of motion transfer their mattresses have. If a bed has high motion transfer, one person will feel all the movement of the other person (or pet) and often gets jostled awake. Motion isolation reduces this feeling.
They use foam or pocketed coils to reduce the effects of movement across the entire mattress. You should get a better night’s sleep even if your partner practically levitates off the bed to change positions.
Another benefit has to do with that previously mentioned sweet spot. When one partner is heavier than the other, it creates a dip in a traditional mattress that causes you to roll together in the night. Motion isolation keeps the surface nice and flat for everyone.
Both companies are happy to offer financing for customers who can’t or don’t want to pay the entire price of their purchase. You can receive a decision within minutes and checkout directly from their purchase page as usual. It also includes any accessories you may decide to purchase.
Both companies offer plain and adjustable bed frames if you need to redo your whole sleep situation. Ghostbed provides a full range of other accessories so you can overhaul that part of your life as well.
Manufacturing and Customer Service
Both companies commit to keeping their manufacturing in the United States. You ‘won’t have to wait forever for a mattress delivery, and you know you’re supporting the local economy by choosing a company that hasn’t shipped overseas.
Their customer service representatives also appear to be US-based. They have excellent reputations for polite and fast responses to inquiries and issues. There won’t be any language barriers, and you should get your answer on time.
How Are Ghostbed And DreamCloud Different?
There are a few differences in mattress construction and logistics.
Ghostbed has two different mattresses. Their budget option, the original, is a three-layer construction that uses two contouring layers and one support layer. The top contouring layer is an aerated foam that improves breathability while the middle layer is a gel infused “ice” layer that prevents heat from building up in the core of the mattress. The bottom layer is dense support foam that pushes back against the body keeping the spine aligned.
The Ghostbed Luxe uses more layers of gel-infused foam plus a proprietary cover material that wicks away heat and moisture for even more cooling. If you have serious trouble with regulating your temperature at night, this one might offer you some relief.
DreamCloud uses eight different adaptive layers to create their contouring and supporting sections. The first two layers are contouring foams, one gel infused and one quilted for more comfort. The next two are transitional layers that ease your body into the supportive layers of the mattress.
The support layers are individually wrapped micro coils and another layer of dense support foam. Both give structural integrity to the mattress and improve edge support. The entire mattress has a cooling material that’s a cashmere blend for softness and breathability.
The Ghostbed original begins around $495 for a twin and goes up to about $900 for a California King. The Ghostbed Luxe starts at about $945 for a twin and caps out at $1825 for a California king.
The DreamCloud starts at about $600 for a twin and ends around $1500 for a California king. Their twin models seem perpetually sold out, so you’ll have to wait if you’re investing in a smaller size.
Ghostbed mattresses are compressed and shipped in a box. You don’t have to be home for the mattress to be delivered successfully. To unpack, open the box and gently tear the plastic away from the bed so that it can reinflate. It should take a few hours, but most are ready to sleep on that night.
The delivery person isn’t able to help you move the mattress into place and won’t haul off your old mattress.
DreamCloud gives you the option of white glove delivery. Someone will bring you the mattress during a specific window and help you set everything up. You can also choose to have your old mattress hauled away. You’ll have to schedule your day around delivery, but the transition will be seamless with little work on your part.
Ghostbed gives customers a total of 101 nights to try out a new mattress before deciding if it’s the right one.
DreamCloud gives customers a full year to sleep on the mattress before deciding. If at any point you decide the bed isn’t right for you, you can return it.
We recommend sleeping on your new mattress for a minimum of a month to allow your body to adjust and to let old pains to subside.
Ghostbed offers a 20-year warranty for mattress defects and will replace your mattress at no cost to you.
DreamCloud offers a warranty for the life of the bed. During the first ten years, they’ll replace a defective mattress for free. After ten years, they may decide to replace the mattress, or they’ll repair it at no cost to you.

We’re confident recommending Ghostbed as the best choice based on our analysis of key factors that an average, discerning mattress shopper would care most about.
We like that DreamCloud uses such targeted layers, and we certainly love that they offer such a generous trial period and warranty, but we think you’ll be happy with either of Ghostbed’s options and you won’t need the warranty or the trial periods to prove that.
It has an option for heavier sleepers. Plus, the cooling properties of both mattresses should keep couples at a comfortable temperature. There’s no center sweet spot, so you’re free to spread out as much as you like. They’re tied in our mini breakdown here, but we think our targeted recommendations will explain our logic.

For sleepers with specific needs…
A few specific recommendations.
Side Sleepers: Choose Ghostbed
Here’s why. Ghostbed provides good combination support, so it’ll support your pressure points without being too soft for your partner who isn’t a side sleeper. It also has good edge support, so you can use the side of the bed to get comfortable.
Stomach Sleepers: Choose Ghostbed
Here’s why. The firmness rating of the Ghostbed should relieve pressure from your shoulders and hips without overextending your back. And again, you can use the edges to get into a comfortable position without sinking.
Back Pain: Choose Ghostbed
Here’s why. Ghostbed’s firmness should relieve pressure from your lower lumbar region so that you wake up with less pain in the morning. It also discourages tossing and turning, making it less likely you’ll wrench your back in the middle of the night.
Heavy People: Choose Ghostbed
Here’s why. Ghostbed is rated for weights of up to 750 pounds, so you’ll have more leeway here if you’re heavier than the average sleeper. You’ll lose some of the contouring of the DreamCloud because it can’t quite handle the extra weight. We also recommend looking at an entirely different bed, Winkbeds Plus, which considers weight in the construction of the mattress.
Here’s why. Ghostbed’s ice layers should keep you at a comfortable temperature despite there being two bodies in the bed. It also has good responsiveness, so you won’t lose all the bounce during couple’s activities. And let’s not forget; it has excellent motion isolation, so everyone will sleep peacefully when it’s time for bed.
Ghostbed has proper combination support for couples looking to keep their options open for different sleep style, but who still want the temperature regulation of some of the newer memory foam beds. You can get a great bed on a budget without sacrificing some of the luxuries of higher-end beds.
Even though Ghostbed has fewer layers than the DreamCloud, you don’t always need more to get a good mattress. Here, the simple design of the contouring and support layers keeps you from waking up in pain from tossing and turning or laying in a position that isn’t healthy.
DreamCloud does have some desirable features such as the trial period and warranty, but Ghostbed’s warranty is plenty long enough for the life of any mattress, much less the Ghostbed itself, and the trial period would only matter if you couldn’t decide about the bed. We think you’ll love it and it won’t even take 30 days for you to figure that out.
Go with simplicity in this case, rather than complicated layers. There’s enough science and design to support this being the more comfortable of the two, and you won’t even have to worry about the weight limit.
Do things like warranty and sleep trials matter to you enough to sway your decision? Do you think the design should err on the side of complex or is less really more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
