The Purple Mattress company is the brainchild of Tony and Terry Pearce, two brothers with an extensive background in engineering and comfort technology. Back in 1993, the brothers were in the business of designing and creating wheelchairs. This was how they first learned about “pressure sores,” which were sores caused by sitting in a wheelchair.
In order to help increase wheelchair comfort, the Pearce brothers invented a lightweight cushioning fluid called Floam. Not only was Floam a success in wheelchairs but also became widely used in medical beds, ankle/knee braces, footwear, backpack straps and more.
Looking to improve on the success of Floam, the brothers invented Hyper Elastic Polymer in 1996. This unique material was both strong and soft. It could be stretched up to 15 times its original size but return to its original shape without a problem.
luThis ability to redistribute pressure points also turned out to be a great feature for a mattress. But in order to create enough Hyper Elastic Polymer for a mattress, Tony and Terry had to first invent a machine called the Mattress Max.
Today, Purple Mattress company is known for their affordable polyfoam mattresses. Delivered in a bright purple bag, these mattresses offer comfortable support and relief from a variety of back ailments. But is a Purple Mattress the mattress of your dreams? This complete Purple Mattress review has a 100% impartial look at the pros and cons:
Purple mattresses are designed for basically all body shapes and sizes. So they purposefully have a small selection. For most of the company’s life, they’ve only offered The Original Purple Mattress.
However, recently they’ve expanded their product offerings. The Original Purple Mattress is now called The Purple 2. With 7.5” responsive support coils and a two-inch Purple grid layer, this mattress is the firmest offering. Works well for people who sleep on their back.
The Purple 3 offers additional versatility. The Purple grid layer is three inches thick, which provides more dynamic pressure relief. This is often a good choice for people who change position often as they sleep. Also, the Purple 3 is often a good choice for couples with different preferences on mattress firmness.
Finally, the Purple 4 is their newest, most advanced and softest mattress. With a four-inch grid layer, this mattress provides targeted support and relief for your body’s pressure points. At the same time, grid and padding create a weightless feel for full-body relaxation.
Aside from mattresses, Purple also sells related accessories such as pillows, sheets and bases. The advantage to buying these items from Purple is you know they’ll fit your bed perfectly.
The Purple Pillow is often a good complement to the mattress. Made from the same Hyper Elastic Polymer as the mattress, the Purple Pillow helps support your head, neck and jaw. Keeps your spine straight while also helping you maintain a clear airway throughout the night.
2020 Purple Coupons, Discounts, Sales, and Deals
Purple mattress is mainly an online retailer. So while coupons are often available, they tend to appear and then disappear quickly. Here are a few current coupons and discounts currently available:
Also, Purple Mattress is currently offering a free seat cushion with the purchase of the mattress. Made from the same material as the mattress, these seat cushions provide comfortable support for your favorite chair.
Sleep Trials, Warranties & Return Policy
Buying a mattress online – one you can’t see or touch first – sounds like a bad dream. Purple Mattress understands this, so they have a pretty generous return policy.
Basically, you can keep the bed in your home for 100 nights. If you’re not happy with the mattress, you can return it with no questions asked. Purple will send you a shipping label so return shipping is free.
This doesn’t apply to every product the company sells. For instance, the Purple Mattress Protector cannot be refunded. However, the Protector does include a 10-year warranty.
All Purple mattresses also include a 10-year non-prorated warranty. They will replace or repair any manufacturing defects. Coverage includes visible indentations, which basically means the mattress is not returning to its original shape. The warranty also covers cracks, splits and similar issues.
However, the warranty doesn’t cover any damage caused by the user. This can include burns, stains, tears and damage which results from improper foundational support. Sun, water, bug and rodent damage is also not covered. Warranty is only valid for the original purchaser of the mattress.
Reviewed: Purple 4 Mattress
The Purple 4 mattress is Purple’s most advanced and newest mattress. At its core, the Purple 4 is still very similar to the Original Purple mattress, only with a few more bells and whistles. Here’s an in-depth look at the features of the Purple 4:
What Sizes Is It Available In?
Each line of Purple mattresses is available in five standard sizes. Here’s a quick look:
- Twin XL 38W” by 80L” by 9.5H”
- Full 54W” by 75L” by 9.5H”
- Queen 60W” by 80L” by 9.5H”
- King 76W” by 80L” by 9.5H”
- California King 72W” by 84L” by 9.5H”
What’s It Made Out Of?
The heart of the Purple Mattress is Hyper-Elastic Polymer, a unique pressure-releasing material which won’t be found in any other mattress. This polymer is organized in a grid called the Purple Smart Comfort Grid.
The grid is reinforced with buckling column gel. Underneath the grid is a support layer of 1.8 PCF polyfoam.
The walls of the grid support or fold based on the pressure level. This helps distribute weight across the entire mattress for full body support. The design adapts to your pressure points regardless of your sleep position.
Memory foam mattress tend to overheat, but the Smart Comfort Grid is designed to remain open even when under pressure. This allows uninterrupted airflow to help prevent night sweats.
Traditional bed fillings don’t always do a great job of isolating movement. The Purple Smart Comfort grid offers dynamic movement response. This means you can’t feel your partner, pets or mattress movement even if it’s happening right next to you. A good choice for couples, especially if one person or more is a light sleeper.
The Purple 4 has a four-inch grid layer, making this the thickest layer available. Protecting the mattress is a cover made of 90% polyester and 2% spandex for a durable, comfortable stretchiness.
Additionally, the mattress is non-toxic and allergen resistant. All foam and gel type mattresses are naturally more resistant to allergens than down-filled mattresses, which can be a breeding ground for dust mites and other unwanted critters.
The Hyper Elastic Polymer is made from food and food-contact grade ingredients. Now, that doesn’t mean you can eat your mattress. It simply means the mattress materials are safe for long-term use around people. Plus, the Polymer is also completely recyclable.
All foam used in the mattress is CertiPUR-US Certified. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to consumer safety. In order to be certified, the foam must be made without mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde and many other contaminants.
Is It Good For…?
Everyone has their preferences. Read on to see if this mattress will deliver on your personal needs.
The dynamic grid supports proper spinal alignment for side sleepers. The mattress aligns your ear, shoulder and hips. Plus, your top leg is properly supported, preventing your hips from resting at an uncomfortable angle.
Yes. The mattress provides support across your entire body. Plus, because no down is used as a filling, you don’t have to worry about allergies or dust mites.
Yes. Humans aren’t designed to sleep on a flat, hard mattress. Instead, the best support is found in a mattress like the Purple 4 which contours to the exact shape of your spine and helps relieve and prevent back pain.
Yes. The Smart Comfort grid remains open even when compressed. Your body heat doesn’t become trapped in the mattress. Instead, continuous internal airflow allows this heat to dissipate away from your body. Great for reducing night sweats and staying comfortable in hot climates.
Yes. The 1.8 inch PCF polyfoam provides support for large and overweight bodies. Also, the dynamic movement response system makes the bed easy to get in and out of. There’s no excess mattress movement to cause imbalance.
Yes. The Purple 4 provides support without a huge sacrifice in responsiveness. However, buckling-column mattresses will always be firmer than spring and hybrid mattresses. So some couples may prefer a mattress with more bounciness, even if this results in less support for sleeping.
Where Can I Buy It?
Purple Mattresses are not sold through many physical locations. They have a single showroom in Alpine, Utah. While they do apparently partner with some retailers, no additional details are listed on their website.
How Much Does It Cost?
The Purple 4 is a luxury mattress which is listed at $2499 on the Purple website. However, the Purple 4 is the most expensive mattress offered by the company.
The Original Purple Mattress starts at a much more reasonable $1299. The Purple 3 splits the difference in cost at $1899.
If those prices are still a bit too steep for your budget, Purple also offers financing through their partner Affirm. This is an alternative to credit cards. With financing, you get a 0% APR for the first six months. Flexible monthly payments are available via check, debit card or bank transfer.
Is It Worth It?
There’s really nothing like a Purple mattress. This is the only mattress on the market with the Hyper Elastic Polymer and reinforced buckling column gel. While in many ways the Hyper Elastic Polymer is similar to the more-familiar hybrid foam mattress, there are also a few important differences.
Purple mattresses stay cool even in hot climates. They’re probably the best choice out there if you’re a warm sleeper or suffer from night sweats.
This is also a great choice if you move around a lot during the night. While some memory foam mattresses lock you into one sleeping position during the night, the Purple Smart Comfort Grid adapts quickly to changing sleep positions. You can shift from your side to your back to your stomach without losing support.
Plus, you have 100 days to test out this mattress in your own home. Typically, a mattress will require a 30 days break-in period before you can accurately assess its comfort and support. So you get two full months after the break-in period to really get a feel for the mattress.
The only downside to this mattress is delivery. While the delivery process itself is easy, the actual package is pretty big and unwieldy. You’ll need at least one person to help move the mattress into your home. Unfortunately, this large shipping size is simply an unintended result of the unique construction materials.
The Purple Mattress is delivered right to your door in a purple cylindrical wrap. No matter how strong you are, you’re advised to enlist a friend to help you carry the package to your bedroom. Once in the correct location, you simply cut the vinyl opening to let the mattress unfold.
Most hybrid and memory foam mattress take two to three hours to set up completely. The Purple Mattress has all those others beat, however. This mattress is ready to use in just minutes thanks to the unique properties of the Hyper Elastic Polymer.
On the downside, the package is quite a bit bigger than many other “mattress in a box” brands. Expect the delivery to be at least seven feet tall and to weight a minimum of 114 pounds. Shipped by UPS, you’ll probably want to be home when the mattress is delivered.
Best Bed Frame / Foundation for the Purple Mattress
The Purple Mattress Company offers two foundations. The Platform Base is a stainless steel wireframe base which acts similar to a traditional bed frame. At 16.5 inches high, the base offers about two extra inches of storage space underneath the bed compared to most other bed frames. Strong and sturdy, the base and bed can support up to 4600 pounds.
The other foundation is the PowerBase. This takes a standard bed frame and kicks it up a few notches! The PowerBase is a fully adjustable bedframe which offers a variety of features for both comfort and health.
You can adjust the bed to almost unlimited positions. To change bed positions, you can use either the included controls or even an app! If the choices seem too overwhelming, four preset positions are programmed right in.
The adjustable bed lets you sit up to watch TV or eat. You can also relax tired muscles with a five-speed adjustable massage system. A gentle massage helps you fall asleep at night while a faster massage can help you start the day off energized and pain-free.
Adjusting the bed also allows you to elevate your feet. This helps increase overall circulation. Elevating your feet can also help reduce back pain.
Beyond just relaxing, the PowerBase also lets you sit comfortably to work or use a computer. Includes both USB and power outlets. The idea of staying in bed all day has never seemed more comfortable – or more productive.
Why Not To Buy a Purple Mattress
The biggest complaint surrounding the Purple brand is what’s called the “Purple Powder.” This is a light purple dust which appears on the mattress when the package is opened for the first time. A video showing the Purple Powder went viral a few years ago, and the term is still prominent in the search results for the mattress.
Fortunately, the purple powder is perfectly harmless. It’s simply copolymer powder used in everything from sunscreen to makeup. In the case of the Purple mattress, this powder is used to keep the Hyper Elastic Polymer from sticking to itself during shipping.
Another reason you might want to consider a different brand is if you want a mattress with a smaller shipping size. The Purple Mattress arrives in a box which requires two people to move. If this is a problem due to your living situation, you might want a mattress which is shipped in a more compact fashion.
Casper mattresses use multi-layered hybrid foam. While these mattresses are very comfortable, they don’t typically provide as much support. The Purple Smart Comfort Grid supports the widest range of sleeping positions and body sizes.
However, Casper mattresses arrive in a much smaller package than the Purple mattresses. You likely won’t need a second pair of hands to unbox this mattress.
Tuft & Needle mattresses are generally considered a good choice for those who sweat in the night. With a light mattress cover, air can flow freely to keep the sleeper comfortable and cool. However, the unique grid design of the Purple mattresses also allows for plenty of airflow, making the difference between the two brands minimal here.
Overall, purple mattresses get a solid A-. The mattress itself provides comfortable support for just about everybody regardless of size or preferred sleeping position. Plus, the unique Hyper Elastic polymer and Purple Smart Comfort Grid promote proper spinal alignment and help reduce back, neck and hip pain.
The Purple mattress is also a very safe buy. You have 100 nights to sleep on the mattress in your own home. Aside from getting a solid sense of the comfort of the mattress, you’ll also know how well the mattress can keep you cool at night.
Purple mattresses are also a good choice for couples. The grid technology allows one person to enter and exit the bed without causing mattress-wide motion. Additionally, the grid design is firm and flexible, allowing people with different mattress preferences to sleep comfortably.
However, the price can be a bit high, especially for the Purple 4. While the prices are generally lower than similar memory foam mattresses you’d find in a retail store, Purple mattresses are often more expensive than similar online retailers.
At the end of the day, there’s really nothing else like a Purple Mattress. The Pearce brothers and their inventive minds have created a mattress which helps reduce muscle pains while improving your overall quality of sleep.
