About the Brands

Despite their huge size, there are a few things that both companies have in common, but in other ways they are more different than they are alike

How are Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number alike?

Some of the logistics and the mattress goals are the same.

Mattress Philosophy

Both companies set out to change the way we think about mattresses. Conventional beds didn’t do a good job of contouring to the body, so you spent a lot of time trying to get into a comfortable position.

Fast forward to today. Both Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number make their mattresses with contouring in mind. Their beds give way on the top so that your shoulders or hips sink further into the mattress. If you’re a back sleeper, it provides your lower lumbar region more targeted support, so it doesn’t collapse into a painful pressure spot.

They might not go about it in the same way, but both companies have gotten rid of the traditional coil mattress and gone for something updated that’s based on current sleep science and body physiology.

Edge Support

Even though they’ve done away with the traditional coils, neither mattress sacrifices structural support. You can sleep all the way to the edge of the bed without feeling like you’re going to fall off.

You can also sit on the edge of the bed and get in and out of bed with more support and responsiveness. For some, traditional memory foam makes it very difficult to get out of the bed, but you should feel pretty good about both of these.

Motion Transfer

Conventional innerspring mattresses weren’t great for partners either. If your partner even moved a leg, you could feel the vibrations on your side of the bed. Heaven forbid if you have a partner who frequently changes positions or gets up in the night. You probably never sleep.

Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number have reduced the amount motion you feel from your partner so that you can continue sleeping with minimal disturbances. It also reduces the dip created when one partner is heavier than the other.

Financing

If you aren’t able to swing the cost of a new mattress, we get that. You don’t have to sleep on your old mattress while waiting to get the cash, however. Both companies have financing options that you can apply for right on their checkout page and proceed as usual. You get a decision right away, and it can be the difference between a new bed and waiting for many people.

Shipping

Both companies offer white glove shipping. Instead of compressing the mattress and putting it in a box for delivery, they use traditional delivery services. You get your mattress during a delivery window, and the delivery person helps you bring your mattress inside. If you don’t have anyone to help you get things set up, you’re covered.

Manufacturing and Customer Service

For many of you, it’s important to support companies that manufacture in the United States. Both of these companies’ primary manufacturing locations are in the US, so you know you’re helping an American based company.

Customer Service also appears to be located in the United States. The last thing you want when you’re trying to resolve an issue is someone who doesn’t understand where you’re coming from. Both companies have excellent reputations in the customer service game for getting things taken care of quickly and thoroughly.

Accessories

If you need to overhaul your entire sleep situation, both companies offer a range of solutions that can help you. You can purchase a variety of foundations, plus adjustable frames. They also have pillows, mattress protectors, and sheets.

You can add these accessories to your order as you check out and the white glove delivery service will help you get everything set up.

Showrooms

Tempur-Pedic is the reigning champion for showrooms. The mattresses are in a large number of stores and showrooms worldwide, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find a mattress to test out before deciding on a purchase.

Sleep Number mattresses are only in Sleep Number showrooms, but there are currently close to 500 of those in the US, so it’s still pretty easy to find a showroom to test out different styles before you buy.

How are Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number Different?

Let’s start with a few of their mattress styles.

Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic has three main options although the first choice should be between hybrid and traditional memory foam.

The Flex is a hybrid mattress that uses micro coils and a combination of foam layers to give you support and contouring. The micro-coils are pocketed so there’s less motion transfer and the memory foam layers contour to the body.

The Contour is an all memory foam mattress that uses a top contouring layer to conform to the body and relieve pressure points particularly for back and side sleepers. The denser support layers give the mattress structure and prevent the deep hug of traditional memory foam. It’s rated at about a seven on a ten point firmness scale.

The Cloud is the softest version of Tempur-Pedic. The Cloud uses the same layering method as the Contour, but the foams are much softer and give a lot more. It’s rated at about a five on a ten point firmness scale, so you’ll get a bigger memory foam hug with this one. It doesn’t sacrifice edge support though.

If you need an ultra-luxury bed, Tempur-Pedic also offers the Grand Bed. It mimics a luxury bed from a five-star hotel. It gives you the full luxury experience from Tempur-Pedic in layers of foam that contour and support.

Sleep Number

Sleep Number has a few different models, but the basic idea is that air channels circulating through the mattress can be inflated or deflated to change the firmness levels of the bed.

Memory foam surrounds the air channels. The foam provides the contouring so that your curves are well supported. The foam is open cell and breathable, so it doesn’t get as hot as other types of memory foam.

It requires an electrical connection to manipulate the air channels so you’ll have to connect the bed somewhere convenient to an outlet. The air channels are insulated with rubber similar to a bicycle inner tube, so the mattress is more durable than a traditional air mattress.

Each side of the larger beds is independent of each other so partners can set their individual preferences. One downside to this method is that the center of the bed can be somewhat uncomfortable if you find yourself sleeping there.

You have the option to add an insert that reads your vitals and sends the info to a smartphone app so that you can track things like sleep and wakefulness. If you’re serious about your sleep health, this can be one way to bring your mattress into the tech age.

Trial Period

Tempur-Pedic offers you 90 days to try out your new mattress to figure out if it’s right for you. If you don’t like the bed, you can replace it or receive a refund with no additional cost to you. Sleep Number gives you an additional trial period that ends up being 120 days. You can also replace or receive a refund from Sleep Number if it doesn’t hit the spot.

Warranty

Tempur-Pedic gives you a ten-year warranty for defective mattresses and some wear and tear that isn’t expected. The company reserves the right to make judgment calls in certain situations.

Sleep Number gives you a 25-year warranty for defective parts. This time is pretty critical for a mattress with so many different components. You’re covered for a wide range of defects and things that could go wrong.

Heavy Sleepers

Tempur-Pedic isn’t rated for heavy sleepers. This means that if you’re on the heavier end of the scale, your body is going to move through the contouring layers to the support layers. You’re going to lose some of the benefits of the contouring layers, and the mattress will feel more firm than its rating.

The Sleep Number is going to be a lot better for heavier sleepers because you can adjust the bed to accommodate your weight and curves. Although the bed isn’t made for heavier people in mind, the customization process can change the way your body interacts with the entire bed. Plus, if one partner is significantly heavier than the other, each can set the mattress for their body weights.

Price

A significant difference between the two companies is the price. Tempur-Pedic is more expensive across the board. The California kings for most of the models are going to set you back an average of about $3000 or more. Although they do have some models that are a little bit cheaper, Tempur-Pedic is going to be a significant investment.

Sleep Number is about $1000 less on average for most of their models although some of the more elaborate mattresses can be as much as Tempur-Pedic. For the most part, the difference between the two isn’t as much as you might expect, but the Sleep Number should get you a lower investment if you need wiggle room.

We’re confident recommending Sleep Number as the best choice based on our analysis of key factors that an average, discerning mattress shopper would care most about. Tempur-Pedic has excellent contouring and supporting mattresses, but we like that we can customize our experience with different firmness settings.

We also love that we can add sleep metrics that go straight to a smartphone. If you have a lot of trouble with your sleep, it might not be enough to change your mattress. You may also need to analyze your health habits to figure out exactly what your body needs.

For sleepers with specific needs…

Side Sleepers: Sleep Number

Here’s why. You can adjust your bed to cradle your side sleeping curves exceptionally well without having to settle on that softness forever. And if your partner isn’t a side sleeper, neither of you have to make a sacrifice.

Stomach Sleepers: Choose Sleep Number

Here’s why. You can quickly adjust the bed for the firmer needs of stomach sleepers. Even better, you can get the exact right setting for stomach sleepers.

Back Pain: Choose Sleep Number

Here’s why. Not every firm mattress is automatically going to relieve back pain. With Sleep number, you can adjust the settings until the pressure on your lumbar region releases.

Heavy People: Choose Sleep Number

Here’s why. The customizable levels of the Sleep Number mean that you can adjust things to account for different weights. While standard mattresses may seem firmer to you than their ratings, you get to decide what’s comfortable with Sleep Number

Couples: Choose Either

Here’s why. This is a tough one. Tempur-Pedic’s Flex models provide a lot of bounce which is excellent for couple’s activities, but it also reduces motion transfer for when you guys are ready to sleep. The downside is that you can’t set your individual preferences.

Sleep Number is a divided bed so you can each set your preferences. If you’re on the opposite ends of the spectrum, no one has to sacrifice. The downside is that the middle of the bed isn’t as comfortable because that’s where the two sides meet.

Conclusion

Sleep Number’s interesting approach is going to solve sleep problems for a lot of couples and those on the heavier end of the spectrum. Even if you choose a mattress for your back pain or side sleeping needs, not every person’s body is the same. It’s a huge benefit to be able to adjust everything to your own specific needs.
